DansGreyMj
how much stonger are the 760s than the 296s, what years did they run each of the I'm on the hunt for a non disco 30 and want to know if there is a big enough difference to wait to find 760s? tia dan
Pete M
I assume you mean 297? I've heard they are stronger, not sure how much, but every little bit counts when it comes to U-joints. I don't think the 760s ever came stock in an XJ, but they are the same size as the 297s, just stronger.
DansGreyMj
thx for clarifying what years did the 297s come in
Pete M
If I remember right, 97+ in everything. Before that, look for ABS on the non-CAD axles. Back to maybe 90 I think. Could be wrong on that one. You can always buy an axle in good shape and then upgrade the shafts/joints later if they turn out to be 260s.
86FUBAR
i thought that the 760s came in the rubicons and 297s in every thing els. reason being they didnt want to put the same ole same in the rubie caus it was pos to be bigger n better . least thats what i remember readin
Pete M
Could be. But then, that's not exactly the top reason to buy a Rubi front axle. :D
jeepthing07
Spicer don't make the 297's anymore they upgraded to HD forged 760's The rough looking one is a cast 297 and the smooth looking one is a 760. http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/axle/760/

Pete M
Look for the ABS pump in the engine compartment. I don't have a pic of that but I bet you can google something up.
87manche
an ABS axleshaft will have the tone rings on it, just behind the U-joint on the axle side yoke., It's a splined collar.
