Howdy Henk. Welcome to the madness. Good luck on finding what you're looking for. One of the biggest sources for American vehicles in Europe is from GI'S who had their POV shipped over. Since pick ups weren't authorized there wasn't any shipped over. Were you looking for one local? Or were you going to ship one from the states?

He paid for it out of his own pocket or had some 'inside friends'. The government was very firm on the policy. No pick ups at government expense. There's always a way around policies and regs if you know the strings to pull. It sounds like he may have bought it from a American dealer and had it delivered to a European dealer for pick up. Was it a 4WD? Maybe he drove it North thru Canada, across the ice pack and into Norway. Then down into whatever part of Europe he was in. I do know of one incidence where a crew chief on a C124 loaded his CJ5 onto the plane and got it into England. I also know of a incidence where a crew chief wanted to buy a sports car in England and fly it into the states but the PIC told him no. Then the PIC, a major, bought himself a nice shiny new Jaguar XK and loaded it onto the plane. Half way across the Atlantic the pilot noticed the light come on indicating the rear loading doors was being opened. He got on the deck just in time to see the grill of his shiny new car disappear behind the AC. Whatever.

My MJ was bought as part of the AMC armed services program and delivered to the OO in England. He had it brought back to the states at the end of his tour there. I have no idea if that was allowed, or if he knew someone who knew someone who knew someone.

When was this? The gov shipped my S10 back and forth from CONUS to overseas twice in the 80s. There were no restrictions as to whether the POV was a car, van, or pickup. And depending on the SOFA agreement with the particular country, you could sell the vehicle to a foreign national. I sold the S10 to a local, bought a new XJ from AAFES, then shipped it home. The State Dept. pukes could sell their vehicles to the locals in any country. That was one of the perks the Embassy people got. They'd ship a Lincoln or Caddy to their new duty station, sell it to a local for 2x - 4x it's worth, then buy a new something from AAFES.

A lot can change in that time.

A lot has changed. Point is that it can be done now with no problems. I was in the military also in the 60s. But my "car" was a big gray floating thing. I never shipped vehicle during those times..........
