Picked up a '97 WJ the other day, Bad transmission. PO had pulled both drive shafts and transfer case but quit when he got to the transmission. A couple Ben's changed hands and it was mine.

Dropped the pan, replaced filter and adjusted bands. Replaced trans case and rear drive shaft. Couldn't find the trans jack so had to do it the old way. Flat on my back, lift TC up get it started, then hold it in place with one hand and get a nut started with the other. Cajone test? Jeep drives great in forward and reverse, instant response and no slippage. However it doesn't shift out of low. Checked 2 electrical connectors, 1 vacuum line, shift linkage, throttle hooked up. Really don't want to drop the pan again. Any ideas? :hmm:

I wouldn't know a code if one bit me. Never thought about it. Can it be gotten by doing something under the dash to make the dash lights blink? or would I need a code reading machine? Also did something new today. going up the road at 30-40 mph and it acted just like the brakes were being applied. Only did it when the gearshift was in D. Not in 1 or 2. I got the dern thing to part out. just wanted the engine, but after driving it and checking everything out it's a nice Jeep. Except for the tranny. Now I'm taking it as a challenge, just to see if I can fix it or not.

???

1999 was the first year for the WJ. Is this really a WJ and you wrote the wrong year, or is it a ZJ?

1997 (or 1999, if it's a WJ) was OBD-II. Takes an OBD-II scanner.

Sounds like what a 44RE was doing, eventually the Jeep wouldn't even move. The TCC fault is the Torque Convertor Clutch Solenoid. Sometimes its just the solenoid and its a cheap fix and you don't have to drop the transmission, sometimes its the convertor itself, lots more work. That is if that's the issue... :dunno:

Put it back in the Caravan where it belongs and punt?

A failed governor pressure sensor and transducer is a commonly reported problem with those trannies. I was told that this and/or a failed PCM will often not show codes???? What to do about it is something that I don't know.
