Tranny Options

Recommended Posts

As noted in my AMC20 post, the Street Comanche requires a new Engine / Driveaxle interface.

The French have been officially dismissed.

However as this is a 2WD application AND as it's getting a 260+HP stroker, is more a horsepower rather than torque consideration...I'm a little daunted by all my options.

Of course the venerable AX15 is the most straightforward swap from a BA10.

But I'm thinkin' it ain't gonna like being speed shifted. :brows:

Then the NV3550. Better, worse, or about the same?

Then there are who KNOWS how many variants of the T5 for Mustangs, World Class, TKO, . etc.

Then Tremec. I remember reading good things about Tremec transmissions a long time ago.

Wasn't Tremec the OEM for T5s or something like that?

But when you get into the T5/Tremec world, I begin to wonder what complications I'd run into regarding various things... like:

The shifter position, is it going to line up with my console opening?

Would it sit under the truck without having to pound the hell of of something to make it fit?

Bellhousing?

What about clutch interface?

I don't care too much about spline counts. Getting a drive shaft modded will be the least of my issues.

Anybody with relative input, please chime in.

I've got lots of homework to do...

Thanks!

The NVG3550 is a truck transmission with an (almost) granny first gear -- first is MUCH lower than on the BA10/5 or the AX-15. I have a 2000 Cherokee with the 3550. It's a great transmission ... but it won't take kindly to speed shifting. Drive it that way and you'll destroy second gear (or the second gear synchro) in about a week.

From what I understand with having hung out with a lot of Supra guys back in HS, it's not difficult to mount an R154 behind a 4.0, or to get an AX-15 behind the 7MGE or 2JZ motors.

Personally I'd be comfortable sticking in an AX-15, and if you happen to kill it, then look for upgrading.
