Clutch issues

Recommended Posts

I have a 91 6cyl 4.0 5 speed and I'm having clutch issues. There's plenty of fluid. Sometimes I can't get it to disengage from first or reverse. If I pump it once or twice it will work and it doesn't do it all the time.

I've had one person tell me it's the clutch cylinder. How hard is this to change and what's its proper name?

Check for clutch master cylinder leakage at your fuse box. The slave cylinder is either internal to or external to the bell housing. Mine (88) is internal, not sure if 91 is internal or external. I

yeahthat.gif I typed the wrong cylinder for the wrong location lol SLAVE is on/in trans. MASTER is attached to the pedal.

Going to work on that this afternoon. Have a friend who is going to help. I've seen the write up about the leaks by the fuse box but if it were leaking, wouldn't the fluid reservoir be low? I check it and it's completely full. I don't see anything on the inside by the clutch but am getting something oily by the gas pedal. Not much. Not puddling or anything but just enough to put a sheen on the floor.

I just had the same issues you are having, mine was the slave cylinder.

mine is a 95 which is a internal slave.

Mine is internal as well. Did you do the repair or have it done? If you had it done, what did it cost you?

Could any of these vacuum lines or electrical wires have anything to do with the starter or cause this truck to not start suddenly?

Could anything I have done under the truck when bleeding the clutch or cutting those vacuum lines and two electric wires cause the truck to not start?

This has happened twice. I crank it and it acts like a low battery. Turn the key off and back on then it started just fine. I drove to work and turned it off. Tried to crank it again immediately and it lugged then started.

Next day it cranked like a charm in the morning and again after work.

Today, cranks just fine first time out then I get home and turn it off. Tried to crank again and nothing. Second time and it started but it sounded like something was spinning a little under the hood. I get it backed into the drive way and turn it off. Try to crank again and nothing. once or twice it acted like it was going to turn over then nothing. No sounds no clicking, not nothing. I have lights, guages and power but not starting.

The starter is almost brand new. I put that on last fall. Don't think it's the battery because when it does crank it's perfect. The only thing I've done to it is what we did under the car bleeding the clutch and cutting those melted vacuum lines and two electrical lines that feed back to the rear transaxle.

Any ideas?
