RynoMJ
I'm hooked at buying an MJ, me and my grandfather were looking into buying a vehicle to restore and modify to make it light trail ready. I think that the MJ would be a sweet vehicle to restore and modify cause I'm a big jeep fan and its an unusual vehicle, however, hes really against it becuase he says its hard to find parts for it, is this the case? DirtyComanche
Sorta. All the front clip and the front doors are the same as XJ parts. Along with the drivetran for the most part. And most of the interior perices are the same as an XJ (other than the back area of the cab). Or you can mod XJ stuff to work. Where you'll run into trouble is if the bed is messed (I just made a flatbed instead...) or without a tailigate. The rear driveshaft and the gas tank and parking brake assembly is MJ specific. So are the rear axles (but, you can fix that with a welder if you need to swap something else in...). I would NOT hesitate to buy one on the reasoning of parts being rare. feerocknok
My father and I are not quite done with our restomod, but I'm driving it now. There wasn't a part I couldn't get one way or another, and I had to replace 95% of all parts in the drivetrain. I got parts through the parts houses, members of the forum, the junkyard and the dealership, as well as a little fab work. Granted, it's not yet complete, but what is left is easy to come by or work through. And, I'm not certain on everyone else, but people compliment mine all the time, even with its mediocre body. JeepcoMJ
definitely go for an mj. You only will run into trouble on it if you buy an 86 with a 2.8 gm motor. DO NOT BUY A 2.8!!! those engines are not sufficient for a truck, and barely so for a fiero. The best engine option is the 4.0, followed by the 4-banger (i think there was the old Iron Duke gm and then late 80's was the chrysler...don't quote me on that though). and like they said, parts ARE available. even regarding tailgates, I own a couple extras and can get more, and I'm sure for the few, very few parts that are hard to get, members of the forum can offer suggestions or parts. good luck with your MJ search, just remember to get rid of all the rust before it leaves the shop! XJ/MJ's only came with the AMC 150CI 4 cyl. Carbureted, Throttle Body Injected, and Multi-Point Fuel Injected.
feerocknok
And try to stay away from the Renault diesel. People think they're cool cause they're rare, and I agree with that, but finding parts for my 2.5L has been hard enough for me to not want to go with something less common. Rquarte, don't even worry about the Renault. you won't find one, and if you do it's a wild card and you'll probably never see it again.
