tdkoon
My fuse box is shot. I found a upull yard that had a 86 4 cylinder 4x4 auto MJ that I pulled the dash harness out of. Wasn't bad at all only took about 20 minutes (without tearing anything up). The plan is to just swap it out directly with my 87 4.0 4x4 5spd. I've done some searching found all the posts about using xj harness, cutting and splicing, replacing terminal connectors, but just hoping you guys can confirm that the direct swap will work, and if it will be plug and play, or if there are any known issues I'll have to address. Thanks in advance for your time and replies...
tdkoon
Have I done something to offend, or am I just too much of a newby idiot to warrant responses? I've only posted a couple times but I'm on this site daily and love it, but never seem to get answered...

If your only issue is the fuse block, consider swapping it in w/o the harness by cutting and splicing after confirming that wire colors and configuration are the same. I'll chime in just to show there's no prejudice towards new commers, but I really don't have the experience with the wiring your about to tackle .. I guess it depends what part of the harness you're wanting to use, if you're just going to try and replace the fuse panel you may end up doing a lot of cutting and soldering as i'mt not sure how much of the entire dash loom you could use. The ECU's are different so my guess is the pinning would be different. Also with the 2.5 being an auto it's going to have additional wires for the tranny controller, and neutral safety switch.... I think an 86 was also Throttle body injected, whereas the 87 4.0 should be multiport injection, however the wires coming from the fuse panel probably aren't much different, but the routing of the wires and plugs may be different enough that the project may be better off waiting for a more similar vehicle. cruiser54
I'd be getting a harness out of an 87 4.0 and forget the 86 harness. Or just get a fusebox out of an 87 and solder the wires into the existing harness.
tdkoon
Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I was just hopeful that since the engine bay harness is separate from the interior harness, and that I was sticking with mj rather than xj it would be a simple swap. I've been to every junkyard in a 60 mile radius and this was the first comanche I'd come across. I guess I'll just have to pull my dash and start comparing the two and start spicing. Thanks again... mvusse
Assuming you stick to an 87 4.0/5 speed, I do not believe there is a difference between the Cherokee and Comanche dash harness. I might be wrong, but I believe all the stuff that is different (like longer leads for tail lights etc.) is a separate harness.
