97-Newer XJ doors on an MJ??

Recommended Posts

This might be a stupid question, but do the body lines/hinges and all match up so one could bolt on a set of 97 or newer XJ doors on, say an 87 MJ? I would imagine it may work if the whole front clip was put on the MJ, but I just want to swap the doors on. The front clip is mashed up on the donor vehicle.

Thanks,

Andy

Hi, Andy. Where ya been hiding?

The doors will bolt right on, but the position of the latch in the door post is different. I don't recall if the newer ones are higher or lower than the old style, but they are different. I believe Kejtar has a write-up on doing this swap over on the NAXJA forum, although I think the way he did it was rather redneck. I wouldn't do it the way he did.

Awwww I'm telling Remi you called him a redneck. Anyway I did it the same way on my XJ. You take the old striker out, enlarge the top hole on the new style striker and then run a bolt through the top hole. It's really easy and the new doors are pretty schweet. I don't think it's too redneck it's just the easiest way and the way that makes sense to me.

Hi Harwood,

Oh, I mostly lurk on this site and use it for a source of info, (LOTS of good info here too!!!) but I have been busy having kids (2 now), still beating on Barnabus a bit and doing my best to stay out of trouble. Leah wants me to build the MJ now, so I have a front axle for it, and I'll have 33" Trxus tires soon, but the doors are getting bad, and I just spotted a newer body style (with the newer mirrors..) sitting in a scrap yard.

Thats cool, I'll have to dig up that post from Kejtar over on NAXJA and see if it is worth it. Hope all is well in MJ-land Ct...

i saw that post. didnt look that hard and i don't think he did bad on the latch. i would weld it on also or something so its stronger. but as long as it lines up and shuts tight i don't see the problem with it. if you find the post could you post the link up. i lost it when my old laptop fried. thanks.

I have a spare set of doors so when I do this swap I plan on cutting the latch section out of the parts doors and welding them in to the new doors and using the old latch rods etc. So if yer doors are a rottin, give it a try and let us know :dunno:
