DubbyDoo Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 ok so i bought a 91 2wd I'm going to convert to a 4x4 the front axle can i use a dana 30 from a grand or must i use one from a cherokee, also what differences are there between the axles? thanks
Eagle Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 You can use an axle from a ZJ (1993 - 1998) Grand and it will bolt right in. The difference is that the XJ/MJ Dana 30s are high pinion, reverse cut, and the ZJ (and TJ, and 2000/2001 XJ) Dana 30s are low pinion, straight cut.
mvusse Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 And the high pinion ones are better than the low pinion ones, but for stock street duty it really doesn't matter that much.
mnkyboy Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 I would also look for a non CAD axle preferably one with the larger u joints.

Also some Grand axles had CV joints instead of u-joints. I even had a Limited 86 V6 XJ with CV joints instead of standard u-joints.
mvusse Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 The Limiteds (V8 engine) have CV shafts. The 4.0s usually have u joints. The shafts are fully interchangeable.
