lexluthier72
Hey All, Kind of a broad question, but after I get done with my body work, I will be thinking about installing 4wd. Its a 1990 2wd currently. Any wiring changes need to be made, or is it plug and play? I understand, I'll need a front axle, and transfer case, and associated shift parts....Anything else? -Erin

lexluthier72
4spd to 5spd?
Pete M
the trannys swap directly. if you have a 4spd manual now, you'll want to find at least 4.10 gears axles. (you've likely got 3.55s now) finding a 2.5l/5spd donor is usually the cheapest route.

lexluthier72
How does that explain this one on Craigslist?: (its a 4 speed?) http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/csw/c ... 07364.html
Pete M
that should have 3,55 gears. and is way overpriced for a donor. you don't need a comanche. XJs work great too. the only thing is the rear axle will need perches and your current rear driveshaft will need to be shortened.
Dr. No
If it was like mine, it had the peguot 5 speed which went out and it was converted to an AX4 (4 speed)
lexluthier72
I guess my question was...Why a 5 speed? The one in the ad is a 4 speed? Am I missing something? (I was not looking at this as a donor, but more of a question of why the need to swap tranny, as it appears they came 4x4 with a 4 speed 2.5L)

Look for a 94+ XJ with 2.
Jeep Driver
Why the 5 speed? Cause I like my 5th gear........you will too. I putt around in 5th gear all the time.........900rpm at 35mph round town.........and on the highway, 1900rpm at 70mph. You'll like the 5 speed. lexluthier72
Aha. Ok. But it still holds true, I'll need to find a tranny out of a 4x4 for the proper mounting...
Glenn Moyer
2.5L 4X4 XJ's are pretty darn tough to find. Around my way anyhow! How bout out of a wrangler? Glenn
Pete M
a wrangler one could also be made to work, but not directly. you'll still need XJ/MJ t-case linkages and an XJ/MJ AX-4/5 shifter handle. plus the wrangler trannys seem to all rotate the t-case up slightly. this can be a good thing cause it provides a bit better ground clearance, or a problem if the t-case hits the floor (which can be solved with a big hammer). car-part.com can help in junkyard searches. Jeep Driver
I just spent the last hour searching the SE for a 2.5 XJ, there was one in NC yesterday for $750. They pop up now and then but don't last long. If you are serious about finding one it takes dedication and the willingness to run out the door and chase it down when you find one. Can't tell you how many deal I've lost by not getting there in time. I made a deal in Richmond VA one evening, 3 calls to the seller by 8pm, got directions and gave him my commitment to be there by 9am. Got the wife to bed early, truck cleaned, gassed, day bag and papers packed. I'm on my way to bed to get a couple hours sleep and the phone rings, it's 10:30, seller calls to tell me not to come because he just sold it.........WTF??? Who shows up at 10:30 at night to buy a Jeep?? Same type of a-hole that shows up at 7am........wakes seller out of bed........to beat me out of a 9am buy.........yep. lexluthier72
This swap is a ways off, but eventually. As far as finding a donor...It will happen when it happens.....XJ's here seem to be pretty abundant. 2.5's are slightly harder to find, but not impossible. There are a couple in the local PNP. -E.
