'85 J10

Was helping a friend of mine move some stuff yesterday with the MJ, and I rolled through downtown Eustis (if you know where that is in central FL) and saw a black J10 that's been hanging around the main highway for a few years now that I've been eyeballing for that long too. Saw a for sale sign and went this afternoon with a buddy to check it out. :brows:

Talked with the guy who owns it for about 20 mins. Found out he bought it a few years back as a serious resto. project, but lately, has been coming upon hard times, and is moving to South Carolina due to $ problems, and because he's getting dental reconstruction as well. Gotta have priorities, so the old J10 is getting the boot after many years of driving, and admiration from the people around town. He doesn't want to sell it at all, but has to unfortunately. Still pretty much bone stock with a 360/TF-727 (not TH400 as previously written) 4x4 setup. Also pretty sure it's got dual D44's.

It's a shame I don't have the $ to buy this old girl. I sure would like to spend some time wrenching on this thing. :wrench:

And to anyone that's interested, there's another posting of this over in the classified's with more info on it.

If it is an auto it had an AMC-patterned 727 from the factory not a TH400 ( the last year for the TH400 was '79). It looks to have lock-outs which probably means a 208 part-time transfer case. If it is a full-time 4x4, it has a 228/9 and the lock-outs were added later. IIRC the rear D44 did not return until '86 so unless it is very late '85 the rear axle should be an AMC Model 23, a heavier duty version of the M20 found under CJ's. The rear diff cover will look lie half of a basketball. The front would be a D44.

 Didn't know they stopped the TH400 back in '79; for whatever reason, I always got the 400 and 727 mixed up. I'm 90% sure that the rear axle was a 44, as it didn't look like a model 23 to me at all. Still, I didn't know there even was such a thing as an Model 23 rear axle. 8)

The M20 is a fairly probelmatic axle due to its weak 2-piece axle shafts ( cutting edge 1930 technology.. :D ) and thin tubes. Swapping to aftermarket 1-piece shafts and welding the tubes to the diff housing is a big improvement for them. The FSJ version, although still called a M20 by most, is technically the M23 with better tubes and 1-piece axles from the factory.
