did quite a bit of reading on the four link, not sure if thats the route I want to go, I did a bunch of searching in here about lifts.

4-links are a tossup for usage on a trail truck... Basically you have to build a double triangulated one if you want it to work at all correct - unless you only run mud  . The major disadvantage to them is that you need 8 joints - which at $40-160 a peice adds up in a hurry. Also, they really take up a lot of space in the rear - say goodbye to the stock gas tank location.

Wishbone 3-links are often a better choice. You only need 5 good joints (and 2 ugh ones) to build one correctly. And you can build an offset setup to retain the stock tank location, etc...

It's something to consider if you really want to change the rear end. If you just want to throw a flatbed and a mild lift on it - most people just us AALs/shackles or SOA.

I've just started looking into it, so my knowledge is lacking a lil, but what about running a parrallel 4-link with Watt's linkage instead of a panhard? I know minitrucks run that or 6 links so the gas tank doesn't become a problem.

An okay picture showing the Watt's:

And a 6 link, which I don't think is offroad friendly, but for reference:

Okay, body lift is definitly out of the question

I'll probably stay away from four link due to the fact this will be a multi-use vehicle. Everday driver, trail rig, wood cuttter-hauler, trailer puller(small trailer).

If things go as planned, I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. If so, I promise to post it. I'm anxious to get it. It may look like a turd to most, but it will be a thing of beauty to me.

Funny you should say that, the place I'm buying it from is a dealership run by two brothers, they started our offroad club 30 years ago. I called the one the other day to tell him I was coming after this. I'm a bonifide scout guy and they would love the chance to put me in a jeep. The conversation was a classic.

Me: hey, bubba<--made up name--, I'm coming up to get that comanche.

Bubba: Okay....are you going to trailer it home?

Me: Nah, I'll have it insured and I'll drive it

Bubba: oh, well you know the brakes ain't the greatest?

Me:yeah, but I drove it and they will be good enough to get me home on the back roads

Bubba: okay....four wheel drive doesn't shift either

Me: thats okay, I'll figure that out and fix it

Bubba: oh, and its going to need tires......actually, you know that thing is going to need a whole lot of work right? and it has some rust too

Me: thats just what I'm looking for bubba, rust means I can trim the fenders and work means I can do it my way, wait a month or two and you won't recongnize the truck :D

Bubba: LOL, yeah, I saw what you did with that old rusted out cj years ago, you must enjoy project vehicles.

Me: yup, keeps me out of the bars, I'll probably be up friday if that works for you.

Bubba: you bet, and we will have a set of dealer tags on it for ya....what was that price we agreed on....$5000?!

Me: no....you were going to pay me to haul it off for ya!

what a great bunch of guys to take the time to make sure ya knew all the greif with a rig.

I'm going to snap a bunch of photo's before I start, should I bother posting them on here? :D

Ya might as well. Make a build-up thread so we can see and comment on your progress as you go. It helps with idea sharing.

I mean, I'm sure there's at least a couple guys on here that read BrettM's build on pirate4x4 and were inspired by it.
