Rocker Replacement parts

Recommended Posts

I got a set of rockers from HERE. It has the same catalogue and numbers, so I assume they get thier shtuff from the same stamper. They were total crap. A 40+ year veteran of bodywork attempted to graft them to my truck, and by the time we had one close to fitting it was so hacked up we threw it in the $#!& can. I took the other one back and got a refund on it an a partial on the other, and we built our own for half the price that fit like a charm.

Their fenders did fit well, although the line is off a little where it meets the "A" pillar (pic). No biggie.

Their front bumper fit good (I shaved the bumperette holes), but their bumper end caps didn't fit as close to the body as the originals. Again, no biggie.

Door handles are for the newer (91 up??) style but fit with a little filing on one mounting hole and look good.

Floor pans weren't available 4-5 years ago when I started this project (I wish they were), so I can't comment on them.

Basically, I'd stay away from the easy to make stuff like rockers, door pannels, cab extentions. Usually you can make them easier than starting with a P.O.S. not to mention a 4x8 sheet of body steel is cheeper than a pair of rockers, and yeilds enough material to do other things you want/need.

anyone use any other places?

I've heard good things about Keystone. Good fit, better price, excellent service, but I don't know what they offer for the MJ as they don't have an accesable online cataloge unless you are a dealer.

i was looking for replacement not restoration, unfortunately I'm not gifted enough to make and fix my own stuff so as of right now my truck in at a local garage getting the transfer case bracing reinforced, a newish transmission and transfer case, rocker and cab corners, exhaust and floors welded in, i may run by him making some rocker panels, the don't need to be fancy, just functional, anyone have links to where people put rock sliders in place of rockers? maybe a write up? that would be awsome, something i could run by him and see what he thinks.

thanks,

Jonathan

One of the local XJ guys here in Michigan did the box steel replacement. One year later the box steel started separating itself from the sheetmetal due to the sheetmetal rusting at the welds. Another option is to use the plastic or aluminum tailgate caps from the latest Dodge trucks. Apparently the curve closely matches the rocker area of MJs and XJs.

i was looking to put some square stock where the rockers are and weld it to the mounts on the frame to sturdy it, so it would pretty much be an extension of the frame, doubling as rocker and rock sliders. it seams that people are just welding it to the sheet metal and that doesnt seam like it would hold very well, thats why i want to tie it into the frame also it would be more holding up the square stock and be more rugged.
