i know at your going to say but i've been looking for a couple hours and i can't find the one about a knock thats present at idle but go's away when reved up a little

Thought the same thing on the GFs XJ, turned out the cat was toast and all the guts were rattling around inside it.

if its a light tapping it could be just normal 4.0L noise, they aren't exactly known for being quiet

 

also if its more prominent after a cold start-up then goes mostly away it could be cold piston slap which is common and design induced, not a problem.

no its horrid knock and does it at idle at any temp

Check the flexplate bolts. 15 minute job.
