JACKED88
While driving around checking my hog traps today I noticed a humming noise coming from my truck. I turned it off to be sure it was in fact coming from my truck. Turned the key back on and sure enough it's my fuel pump. Till today the pump has always been pretty quiet. My guess is its on its way out but wanted to ask if anybody else has had this happen. Suggestions??? Decided to do another little test before finishing this thread. Its been several hours since I drove it so I just went and turned the key to on and listened to the pump again. Apparently now that its had time to sit and or possibly cool for a while the pump sounds normal now. I also checked the porcelain fuel pump resistor by putting a jumper across the two wires but got no change in pump sound. Guess I'll have to drive it around for a while and see if it gets loud again. My luck it'll quit leaving me sittin on the side of the road. :(
2360
My luck it'll quit leaving me sittin on the side of the road. Bought my Comanche back in 1990, hasn't left me sittin on the road yet, except for when I took out a street lamp back in 93. I would of made it home with busted up front end and rad, but when the 2nd tire went flat after leaving the accident a few miles down the road, I was houfing it after that. I always managed to limp home or whatever. I've found sometimes you have to hit the part in question a couple of times and yer up and running again. :Canadaflag:
dasbulliwagen
My pump does the same thing.... sometimes its really loud, other times youll never hear it. It has yet to die on me, though now that I'm talking about it, it will go bad this weekend. I just figured it has to do with fuel level, temp, and who knows how many other factors to make it do what it does. Till it goes out, Ill just deal with it! terrawombat
The fuel pump on my Pioneer is REALLY loud, but only after it has been running for a bit. Sometimes I can feel it vibrate in my drivers seats. It's still going strong...
mjeff87
My MJ has stranded me exactly two times....the first when the alternator went and took the battery with it while I was on a roadtrip and about 60 miles into the middle of nowhere, and the second when the fuel pump died a couple of miles from my house. The pump had been notoriously loud for at least three years (so loud that people "commented" on it when the heard it) but always ran faithfully. One day, I drove it from the house down to the storage facility I rent, pulled up outside the unit and shut it off. Unloaded the bed, got back in, and had no fuel pump, at all. Took me until the next day to source another pump and replace it. Moral of the story....it's not a question of "if" the pump is gonna die, but rather "when". Luckily for me I was only a couple miles from home. YMMV :D Jeff
Geonovast
It could also be a cracked sender, or the rubber stopper on the end of the return line is falling apart, causing the whole sender to vibrate with the pump... which can cause the hard lines to crack. Chances are it's just the pump, but there's another reason to tackle is ASAP.
ParadiseMJ
Has anyone mentioned a toasty ballast resistor?? A poorly working resistor will still conduct current and allow the pump to be noisy.
JACKED88
Has anyone mentioned a toasty ballast resistor?? A poorly working resistor will still conduct current and allow the pump to be noisy.I tested the resistor by disconnecting it and putting a jumper wire on the two wires. The result was no change in pump noise. Sometimes I can feel it vibrate in my drivers seats.Same here. When it was making noise it was also vibrating more than normal. Moral of the story....it's not a question of "if" the pump is gonna die, but rather "when". I'm gonna buy/order one next week. Anybody know if the ones on ebay for around $50 bucks are any good? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... K:MEWAX:IT This one is an Airtex. TrailReadyMJ
I just looked at the Autozone website, and Airtex is what they sell (sells for $71.99 there). The one they have doesn't come with a new strainer, so make sure that one does, or you get one separate.
1990 Pioneer 4x4
My stock (20 yr old) fuel pump got loud way before it finally died. When it did die, it still pumped enough gas to get me home. Good luck on the aftermarket pumps. http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24534

I'll shop for other brands before I order one since Airtex has about a 50/50 reputation on their pumps. I know they weren't building um themselves so does anybody know who was supplying AMC/Chry with their factory pumps? My guess would be Carter.
