No Start Condition

Recommended Posts

Went out to the garage to start my 89 Comanche yesterday. The 4.0

cranked over fine, but it took longer than usual to start. I was

beginning to think it wasn't going to start when it finally started

up. I drove the two miles to work and shut it down. Started fine

when I went to the bank 30 minutes later, and started up just fine

again when I left the bank. Got ready to come home last night, and all

it would do is crank. It had been 45 degrees all day with a blowing

light rain. I went back up last night to try and shoot some ether in it, thinking maybe it would start and I could get it home and in the

garage to work on it. However, I could not get it to even hit on

ether. I tried spraying it above the air filter to make sure it would

suck it into the intake as well.

I changed the cap and rotor, along with all six plugs and wires about

three months ago when I gave it a good tune-up. I put a set of Ford 19

lb injectors in it earlier this year. The MJ has about 185,000 miles on it. I changed out the cps about 4 years ago when it left me stranded one night.

I changed out the fuel pump with one from NAPA two years ago. I can

hear the fuel pump run and cycle like it should.

Once the Jeep started yesterday, it ran just fine. Any ideas?

Plans are to take a timing light up with me today and see if there

is any spark at the plugs.

Went back up this morning with a few tools. Hooked up the timing light to check for spark, cranked and it started. Worst of luck. Now I have to figure out why it wouldn't start so it doesn't end up stranding me somewhere. The only difference in weather is the rain has stopped and the humidity is a little lower.

Any ideas?

Reading your first post:

-how old is the starter itself? (You may want to swap/clean with dielectric spray)

-water in the cap? (WD-40 helps with that)

-check for loose wires (starter, battery, cap-to-injectors, etc)

Thats all I can really think about off the top of my head. When my mj was acting alittle similar to yours it ended up being a dying fuel pump (I thought it was an electrical short somewhere  ) You must keep in mind that it's a Jeep. They do strange things for no reason every now and again.

I don't think the starter is the problem as it cranks over well. The starter and battery were replaced two years ago. I have pulled the CPS off to make sure it is clean and am in the process of putting it back on.

The coil is original. I may end up replacing it.

I did pull as many of the electrical connections apart this summer and cleaned all of them with electrical contact cleaner before putting them back together.

The thing that struck me most last night was if seemed to be acting like it wasn't getting any spark. That's why I thought of cleaning the CPS up. Next I may have to replace the coil. Hate to get stranded somewhere.
