The ballast resistor is a high-watt low-ohm power resistor that drops voltage to the fuel pump so it will run quieter and last longer. It's supposed to get hot, real hot. That's why they are mounted in a porcelain housing.

But that's the problem i am having the truck act's like it is running out of gas and when i shut the hood it completely dies.I have pulled the fuel pump and it is good and replaced the filter.I replaced the old ballast resistor cause it was cracked and the guy at autozone said the truck didn't call for one so he picked one off the shelf that looked like the old one.don't think that it was for a jeep.If it was the wrong one could this be causing my problem?

Just bypass the resistor. It is there because the pumps are a bit loud even when working properly, and is bypassed on start up and during WOT. The 87s never had one.

It might slightly reduce the life of the pump, but you should be fine.

Only other side effect is the noise, but chances are your truck makes plenty of other noises to cover it up.
