Questions about my Turbo Diesel MJ.

Recommended Posts

Ok so I've pretty much redone all the crappy wiring that was in the truck and I've been driving it for the past month. But everything I need something for the motor, NO place has anything. So my question is, what kind of motor is in this truck?!?! I know plenty of car parts dealers, and mechanics and none can put thier finger on it.

Also if anyone has a TD MJ can you post a picture of what your throttle linkage looks like under the hood? My cruise cable popped off and I have no idea what it looks like.

THanks guys.

It's a renault 2.1 turbo diesel. You won't find any parts, they are hard to come by. How many miles are on it, and have you replaced the timing belt yet? Make sure you get it replaced asap as they are interference motors and it will cost you well over a grand if it let's loose.

I'll snap some pics of my dad's when he gets home from work and I swing by his place. He does not have cruise, though...these are rare, cruise is rarer on them.

The air filter can be cross referenced to a tractor air filter...I'll get you the part number. The only source for parts I can find is winnebego dealers. Some early lesharos have the 2.1 in them

True, but they're just as expensive there as they are here, and about as hard to find.

It sucks having to wait 3 weeks for an alternator

What bellhousing does the 2.1 use? Are there any other light-duty diesels that would be a close swap?

Renault 2.1L 85hp & 136tq, i can't really imagine that truck being anything other then scary to drive . . . With the lack of power it can't be all that easy on fuel as your always on the throttle ?

VM Italian CRD 2.8L 140hp & 236tq, now i could this one getting outstanding MPG's and not getting one killed while driving it.

I still think the maintenance repairs ect of both of the engines are going to way off set the fuel cost of them selves . . .

The timing belt is gonna be replaced within the next week. And I matched the air filter to something out of a truck and had to modify it a little but it worked, but yes my truck has cruise, AC/heat and all electric windows and locks. I had to retrofit the AC to work with R134 though. I'm gonna do that when I get the timing belt changed. Does anyone know where to get the belt at? And the truck only has 146,xxx miles.

My dad averages 32mpg mixed driving, and has under 2000$ invested in his renault in the roughly 12 years he's had it....and that includes purchase price and maintenance.

Timing belt idk where to get it...my dad got one with the truck. Try napa or bumper to bumper, or a winnebego dealer

The timing belt is a Gates Power Grip HTD. Gates part # is 7700663544.

It is a cog belt with the inside tips of the cog being a half round, not square.

The book calls for the belt to be changed at 90,000 miles. Mine had just over 100,000 on it when I bought it with a blown belt. All 4 exhaust rocker arms were snapped in half and one rocker shaft support was also cracked. The valves are perfectly inline with the cylinder bore and the pistons are flat topped so it didn't bend any valves (lucky here). The truck now has over 250,000 on it with the same belt I put on when I first fixed the truck. I didn't get to see the OEM belt that broke so I don't know who made it. Maybe the Gates is just a better belt but I don't abuse the truck and do check the belt and it's tension from time to time.

It's not an easy job but can be done without special tools in a couple of hours if you use your head. The timing belt also runs the water pump and injector pump so it stays busy. A Chiltons manual will have the procedure but it MUST!!! be followed perfectly and done right or you could be in for big trouble.

T'is an odd little engine with # 1 cylinder being at the firewall, aluminum block and head, steel (wet) sleeves and old school precombustion chamber/glow plug style injection system. Pump and injectors are Bosch so it has quality parts in it. Just put together in typical (goofy) French fashion.

Mine is used daily on a 40 mile round trip to work and gets 33mpg with 4.10 gears. I've gotten as high as 38 on longer trips and never lower than 26 (all short 2-3 mile runs).

It's not a rocket by any means but it is not a pig either. It will cruise at freeway speeds with relitive ease and I have pulled some fairly hefty loads with it for such a small truck.

As Pat said, parts are hard to get and interchangability is an issue but I can't complain one bit about the service per doller this one has given me. From that perspective it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned.
