clarkerussell Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 My 4x4 conversion is coming together and I have sourced an NV3550 tranny for a fair price. I have an existing NP231 that was behind a 1988 4.0 Auto that I was thinking of using, but would rather have the NP241. I've read that the NP231's behind a 4.0 were always 23 spline input shafts.. is that correct? As for the NP241, since they were behind Automatics, is the input shaft a different length? Long story boiled down to a simple question... If I get a 2001 NV3550 and a late 90's NP241, will they match up? Thanks for everyones help and patience.
Oizarod115 Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 231s and 242s before 1990 were all 21 spline, 91+ all 23 spline. there ARE different shaft lengths though i do not know what they are.
jeepthing07 Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 What did the NV3550 come out of? If its out of a wrangler they are clocked higher and add to that the larger case of the NP241 and i don't think it would even come close to clearing the floor.

All t-cases behind the autos were 21 spline until the HO model year in 91. The AX-15 however has always had a 23 spline output, and Jeep started putting those in mid 89.
clarkerussell Posted November 7, 2006 Author Posted November 7, 2006 You mean 242? If so, it'll bolt to it. My mistake... Yes, it's an NP242... The manual tranny is out of a 2000 XJ.
