87 comanche
lifted my xj 3" know when i give it gas or let off the gas i get noise and vibration could it be my u-joints? It was there before but not as loud.
Lenard
sounds very possible, have you looked at the joints yet? if the u-joint were already going bad the lift did not help them. oh and of course, :needpics:
Automan2164
How did you lift it? Rob L.
87 comanche
sorry no pics i have tried before but can't get them downloaded. It is a 97 jeep country. I put a 3inch rustys offroad add a leaf suspension lift on it. i am hoping that it is just my u joints. I am thinking of taking the drive shaft out and having it balanced and new u joints put in. Backroads
you can try by takin your front shaft out. if it stops then either the U joints are goin out, OR your driveshaft angle isnt correct. Maybe measure you pinion angle while your under there just so you know. Its worth a shot. I ended up right where you are and did the whole driveshaft rebuild first, just to find out it was my pinion angle all along.
Automan2164
He's got where I was going... Just making sure you used a complete kit, and didn't jack up any pinion angles causing the vibe. Rob L.
Pete M
if the rear U-joints are still the originals, I'd start there. U-joints don't take well to changes in their operating angles. :(
87 comanche
Hey thanks guys. Called rustys since they sent me the wrong u bolts anyway and they said the same thing with the angle so they are sending my u bolts and a transfercase lowering kit $ 20 i'll give it a try. But they are the stock u joints so will be replacing them soon also.
Pete M
I would install new joints long before I lowered my trans crossmember.
Geonovast
IMO, a T-case drop kit is going to make your problem worse. They're not practical for an XJ at only 3 inches. Do they make your rear U-joint angles better? Yes. Do they make your front U-joint angles better? NOooooo. They make them worse. Replace your U-joints. If you paid for that drop kit, send it back. If they sent it to you for free, sell it to someone who has a much bigger lift than you and actually needs it.
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW
They're not practical for an XJ at only 3 inches. '97+ XJ's are MUCH more prone to driveline vibes than older era one's. 3" is the "gray" area on the '97+ models.
87 comanche
Gray area so I will always have a little vibe? What did you guys do to correct the angle shims? You think it will get a little better once the add a leaf breaks in?
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW
The correct solution is a Slip Yoke Eliminator (SYE) and CV style rear driveshaft. You can help eliminate vibes often with a TC-Drop and/or shims under your leaf packs to help get the angle's better. However this is just considered a "band-aid" solution. As stated prior; check u-joints first.
