Automan2164
do all cherokee and comanche 5 spd man. trannys interchange? looks like there is an ax5..aT5 and a 10/5.thanks 1st question, what do you have, what engine does it have, what kind of trans does it have now, and what are your plans for it? Geonovast
AX-4/5 : Used behind the 2.5L I4 and 2.8L V6. The AX-4 is identical to the AX-5, except for the lack for 5th gear. One from a 2.8 can be used behind a 2.5, and vice versa. The AX-5 was also used behind the 2.1L Turbo Diesel, however the bellhousing and input shaft are different. BA 10/5 : Used behind the 4.0L I6 from 1987 until mid 1989. AX-15 used behind the 4.0 L I6 from mid 1989 until 1999. The AX-15 can easily replace the BA 10/5... and is a much, much better transmission. I've heard rumors of the T-4 and T-5 behind the 2.5 and 2.8 from 84-86, but never personally seen one. The AX-4/5 CANNOT go behind a 4.0L. There is no bellhousing for it, and even if there was, the trans would not handle it. The AX-15 generally cannot go behind a 2.5 or 2.8, but is possible with a rare 93+ Dakota 4 cylinder/5 speed bellhousing and some fab work. But unless you really really need an AX-15 behind a 2.5 or 2.8, don't bother. The AX-4/5 usually holds up just fine. There is no difference between an XJ trans and MJ trans. YJ/TJ transmissions are essentially the same, except for two differences. One, they clock the T-case up a bit, so you may have the T-case hitting the floor in an XJ or MJ. Not a big deal. Two, the shifter components are not the same. The shifter itself is different, as well as the inner shifter part that moves the sliders. If you have both pieces from an XJ/MJ trans, they will swap into a YJ/TJ trans.
brian
Thanks both of you. I am swapping my busted 5spd and need to know which 5spd will replace it. My rig is an 89 4.o 4x4. looks like the 10/5 is the only one that will replace mine. Good to know the xj and mj are interchangable. oops! now after re-reading the above post I see that in mid 89 the ax15 went behind a 4.ol. this brings up a new question are the ba10/5 and the ax15 interchangable? when looking for these used tranys, the seller sometimes doesn't know which tranny they are selling so I'm trying to get as much info before hand. thanks again
Geonovast
looks like the 10/5 is the only one that will replace mine. Incorrect, I apologize if I implied that. The AX-15 is a direct replacement for the craptastic BA 10/5. Don't bother picking up anothe pukey, get yourself an AX-15. If you do a little digging, there are literally dozens of threads on AX-15 swaps that should answer any questions you might have. Otherwise, just ask them again, that's what we're here for. One of these days someone should do a DIY of it with every contingency covered...

75sv1
Also, the NV3550 is swapable. I think on the AX-15 you will need the trans cross mount from a latter MJ or XJ with the AX-15. Tom

brian
Thanks for the links to other posts on this subject. Looks like the busted one I pulled last night is the ba10.the id tag on the side says it is from 11/89.so they must have switched to the ax15 pretty late in 89. found an ax15 with bell housing and tranfercase. from what I read it is going to be an easy swap. thought I think I saw something about a vacuum hose and the front dif I didn't understand. Hoping to get it in tonight.
Geonovast
The vacuum lines on the front axle operate off of a switch on the transfer case, they control the CAD. (Central Axle Disconnect). This is a device that disconnects the two pieces of the passenger side axleshaft, marginally reducing rotating mass when you're in 2wd, in an effort to save gas mileage. Jeep had completely done away with this thing by 93. As long as you have everything apart anyway, take 5 minutes to lock the thing over and cap the vac lines. You probably won't even notice a drop in MPGs, and it's one less thing to fail (and it does), when you need 4wd. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18415
brian
well crap! I tried to insert a couple photos of the 2 trannys side by side so maybe you could identify better te lines both vacuum and electical. I guess I'm not smart enough to upload the pics using the'insert image' button above. OH well........the old tran has two hoses coming out of it one from the tranfer case and another from near the shift. They tie togeter andend at a metal conector .I never did know what they were they are just hanging there.?? The ax15 I'm putting in only has the one tube/hose coming from the transfer case.I have no idea where it is suposed to go to?? Is this the vacuum that runs the cad you refer to? then there is the 2 prong elec connectr on the old ba10 on the driver side of the tranny.Again I don't know what it does but the wiring for it is still hanging in the truck. I'm guessing the 2 prong elec connector on the opposite side of the new ax15 is the same thing just in a different location. Since they have different types of plugs I'm reluctant to assume they are the same thing?? Any help? It would be easier if I could insert my pics....What is the procedure for that? If you can answer all of the above questions..my hat is off to you! .
Geonovast
What year is the AX-15 from? The sensor you're referring to(on opposite sides) is the same. You'll either have to make yourself an adapter harness, or splice the wires. It's the reverse light switch. The large hoses are the breather lines. The transfercase will have one, the AX-15 does not. I don't remember if the BA 10/5 has a breather or not. The CAD lines are on a round switch on the transfercase. It's about the size of a D battery, and will have 4 vacuum ports. If your AX-15's transfercase is newer than 91, it most likely will not have the switch, as the CAD was done away with. Keep in mind the 231 behind your BA 10/5 will not bolt up to an AX-15. BA 10/5 has a 21 spline output, AX-15 has a 23. If the AX-15 you're getting has a T-case on it already, then you're good to go.
brian
Fantastic! I hadn't thought of the 2 prong elec. sender as the backup light DUH  easy to rewire. great info on the hoses. so they connect to nothing..just there to breath. Yes the ba10 has one for a totall of 2 in my old set up. now there will be just one from the tranfer case. speaking of which...the ax15 I bought came with the correct transfer case and bell housing on it so as far as I can tell I'm good to go. Now I see the 4 vacuum port switch on the trans case next to the speedo connect. It's all becoming clear to me. don't know what year the ax15 came from . The guys at the wrecking yard don't seem any brighter than me.They had no idea. but it is an ax15 with all the correct attachments. also I should note that I was wronfg when I said earlier that my old ba10 was stamped 11/ 89 which conflicts with your info that it was discontinued in mid 89 . Now that I can see it clearly it says july 88. Okay ..so I'm old and half blind... can't' hear much either.
