87Chief
Hey yall I should be getting an MJ soon in August... I can't wait!! Been in the family for years and all the other generations it's been through, no one really 'car happy' enough to fix it up. Grandpa and my dad used it to go hunting 'back in the day' and it got places they didn't know it could.. Grandpa used it also to pull the boat in when winter set in but once he got a Silverado (bigger engine and trip worthy if needed) he passed it down to my Uncle. My Uncle got it because he didn't have a pick up truck to haul stuff that he needed in. He kept it for about 2-3years and kind of gave up on it but still uses it from time to time. Not long ago we were talking and he said some kids (he's a professor) wanted to get it (buy it) to use for fishing and stuff and he was about to but I hopped in and said I'll take it. Told me it was sitting in storage  and didn't want to pay $30 a month to keep it there. Since then the Air Conditioning went out and the guy quoted him $1500 to fix it, well guess what I'm doing this summer, Classes for Air Conditioning! Like woah, omg. hahaha sorry had to throw that in.. Anyway once I get it I will fix the Air Conditioning and do some tune ups, clean it and all that stuff... Sorry for the story.. What I wanted to know is can anyone give me some specs of this Comanche? I can give you what I know so far: 1986 Jeep Comanche Chief, 5-speed, 4 cylinder, 4x4. I don't plan on going off-road with this just yet (college, I know :ack: ) I just plan on using it for a daily driver since my TJ is sooo bad on gas. (Could be with 33" tires and 3.73 gearing)(good ting is the 4.0L on that). But in the long run, the Manche will be my Daily Driver to and from school. Sorry for the long intro/story but just thought I would introduce myself to the club (not in yet though, but will). I do know some things about Jeeps from looking at the forums and myself, having a TJ. There are somethings that I don't know, but that's why people go to the forums, to learn and have a great time... Thanks again everyone! Happy Trails Mike (If some of this doesn't make since, it is late where I am at, so sorry..)

1986Comanche
What I wanted to know is can anyone give me some specs of this Comanche? I can give you what I know so far: 1986 Jeep Comanche Chief, 5-speed, 4 cylinder, 4x4. If it's a Comanche Chief then it's not a 1986. The Comanche Chief didn't exist in 1986. The Comanche Chief didn't come along until 1987. I hope this info helps.

I'm not sure though because whenever I saw it, it had a top over the bed, so it might be a long bed. Thanks for the info! Maybe we can take an offroad trip to Uwharrie or something in the near future. Glad to see a member close to me on here!
dasbulliwagen
ALL 1986 models were long bed, 7ft, they didnt come out with a short bed till 87... 6ft. Just for informational purposes!

87Chief
Hey guys, got the year of the MJ, it is an '87 so.. should my specs be about the same as posted before? I'm still not sure about whether the bed is long or short..
87Chief
I'm guessing it has the AX5 transmission since the year is 87?
Pete M
All years had the AX-5 (or AX-4 is 4speed) behind the 2.5L (except for a handful of 86s that might have gotten the T-5/4)
87Chief
Ok, thanks. :)
dasbulliwagen
All should be the same as previously posted except the transfer case like Pete said, NP231, and could be a short bed, if its a 5 speed AX5 then 4:10 gears, if its a 4 speed AX4 then 3:55 gears, Long bed with a 23 gallon tank, short bed with 16 gallon tank. 87Chief
Wow thanks a lot :) haha. The previous owner said he put a 4x8 piece of plywood so... I'm not sure.
87Chief
In the bed, that is.. How wide is the tailgate? From top to bottom?
Pete M
I'm confused, a 4x8 sheet won't fit in a 7 foot bed. :hmm:
87Chief
Maybe it was when the tailgate was down? I was confused when he said it too..
87Chief
I went to the junkyard today and brought back a gift. :) I'm not sure what year of CHerokee it came out of but it looks exactly the same.. You think it will fit good? Thanks http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/7894/1001815y.jpg http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9030/1001814h.jpg On the far left side of the cluster, there are symbols for lights, list of them are... e-brake light, security, part time, battery, seat belt, check engine, low washer, arrow to shift, ABS let me know your feedback, if it won't work, I'll just sell it to someone on here or eBay. Pete M
the year is important. only certain years are swappable. but if the backside looks like the backside of your unit, it should swap in. What is wrong with your current cluster? Did you know that you can upgrade to a full cluster with only needing to acquire the cluster, the temp and the oil pressure sending units? 87Chief
I know it's from a high 80s Cherokee. I looked at a 85 and they were different..
