Eagle Posted January 6, 2010 Share Posted January 6, 2010 Removing the glass is the only way. There was a write-up on NAXJA, but it was MANY years ago and may not even still be there. The glass can be removed by using a heat gun to soften the adhesive. (Supposedly -- my friends at the glass company assure me this is correct, but I haven't been brave enough to attempt it.) Eagle Posted January 7, 2010 Share Posted January 7, 2010 You can buy just replacement glass if you break one. What I remember from the old repair description is that the mirror head pivots on a pot metal gimbel thingie, and the pot metal cracks or breaks, allowing the ball on the mirror head to wobble around. Somebody figured out a way to rig up a replacement or reinforcement for the cracked pot metal piece. Unfortunately, that's ALL I remember, but it may give you an idea what to expect if/when you get inside. If you try it, please be sure to take photos and do a write-up. deziped Posted January 7, 2010 Share Posted January 7, 2010 Wear a pair of thick gloves, or at least one, and heat only the glass until the class almost falls off by it self. Only heat the glass. The glove is so you can hold the hot glass as it comes loose. I tried pulling on the glass to help get it loose in 2 cases and both times the glass broke. Finally on the 3rd one with lots of heat it pealed off without having to really pull on it. Just be patient and heat it all over evenly. To replace just warm up the glue and press the glass on. I looked at new ones and they were $47.?? for the drivers side and $67.?? for the passenger side (I guess it costs a lot more to make things closer then they appear). I'll remember to take pictures.
