transfercase stuck in gear

How do i get it to shift to other gears? It is stuck in 4 hi for now. I put it on the lift and disconnected the linkage directly from the transfercase and can't get it to move up or down at all.

Check fluid level?

yeah its full. i just took out the drive shaft off the front until i can get it fixed

Auto, or stick?

 

If you went so far as pulling the ft driveshaft (and it still won't come out of gear),

it's probably jammed more than what I've dealt with,

 

but bumping it a few times, going from fwd to reverse is usually enough to free up the 'typical' stuck T-case.

 

Either way, I wouldn't put too much force on the linkage (with a wrench),

'some' force may be OK, but too much and you'll be looking at having to tear it down to fix it (if your not already).

tear it apart you should be able to see the problem right away, if its a NP231 i know those are extremely simple and parts are easy to get

its an automatic. its not the 231np its a 291 i think. i have a 231 that i may try to put in it if i can't get it working.

291? never heard of it.

 

What year is your truck? If it's an 86 with a part time case, it's probably a 207. I had one of those do the exact same thing. I took it out and replaced it with a 231.
