Pete M
So the shifter handle won't pull back to 4wd? any rust under the truck in that area? Also, welcome to the club! :waving:

Pete M
nope the shifter won't pull back properly? or nope there isn't any rust underneath? This thread will show you how to fix the CAD (the vacuum pod thing, stands for Central Axle Disconnect) and never worry about it again. :D viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18415
Eagle
The vacuum disconnect on the axle has nothing to do with shifting the transfer case into 4WD. That's done entirely with the lever next to your right knee. The only thing the axle disconnect does is lock the two parts of the front, right side axle shaft together to transmit power from the differential to the right front wheel. If you are having problems shifting the transfer case, the axle disconnect is not the cause.
moleslayer
I'm having the same issue. New (to me) 89 MJ, and I cannot get it into 4WD. The lever will not pull back more than an inch or two. I'm no mechanic, yet. I'm looking to learn. Where do I start?
Comanche County
You gotta get underneath and examine the linkage for the TC. There's a threaded bolt that tightens on the shift rod allowing you to adjust the linkage. Excess leverage can pull it outta whack...also check the hard plastic grommets (mine were fairly bright green, can't miss em). Mine would come out a lot back in the day making shifting in and out of 4x4 difficult. They're testy little buggers, if they are out you may have to use a pry bar to pop them back in. Comanche County
Right after posting that I remembered I had to go get new grommets from the dealership. They were cheap. Not mine but here's a better discription... http://www.myjeepxj.com/cherokee-repairs/linkage-fix
Pete M
a more serious issue is if the floor is so rotted away that the linkage can't get enough leverage to shift the t-case. :(
Jerry
I'm having the same issue. New (to me) 89 MJ, and I cannot get it into 4WD. The lever will not pull back more than an inch or two. I'm no mechanic, yet. I'm looking to learn. Where do I start? Start by making sure you're using the right method! :redX: I went through this with my new to me 4.0L + AW4, the lever just didn't seem to want to move. The owners hand book says "change into/out-of 4WD-HI any any legal speed", this does not include being stationary. I found to get into 4WD-HI ........ drive in either direction above walking pace whilst pulling the lever gently but firmly, it might take a few tries, there's a knack. Once you got the knack it's easy. To get into 4WD-LO it's different again - Put truck into 'Neutral' and move the lever into the 4WD-LO position. To dis-engage either LO or HI put into neutral and shove the lever forward. It should move easily! If none of that works then, yes, you probably have a seized linkage. If you have a manual trans ...... into neutral, clutch in, move lever, no probs, easy. Might need to roll forwards or back just get the gears to slide together but no special method like the Auto box. Hope that makes sense, it's way too early here for clear mental functions! If it doesn't, shout me and i'll scan the page describing it in the owners manual, unless someone has already done this?
64 Cheyenne
Don't forget to make sure the TC is full of oil (Dexron). Actually I think this should be the first thing checked.
moleslayer
Thanks for the tips. Last night I worked the lever back and forth several times, pulling a little harder each time. On the 4th pull it went into 4WD. I have not attempted to drive it that way more than a few feet yet. I plan to put it up on stands this weekend and look underneath. In addition, I plan to lock the CAD and remove that as a future concern While I'm sure I have some floor rust, the floors are still solid... no holes yet. Pulling the carpet are reworking the floors is my next adventure.
ParadiseMJ
My T/C linkage on my XJ is a bit sticky. I now shift into 4 hi moving in Drive and into 4 lo stopped in Neutral.
