cluricaunne
Okay, so I think I am about to replace the fuel pump in my MJ, for the 3rd time this year. Which of course would mean that it is time to drop the tank and clean it, perhaps even line it... So: any suggestions for tank cleaners and or liners?? mvusse
I had the same problem. After 3 pumps in relatively short order I just wiped the tank clean with a towel and picked up any itty bitty pieces of gravel left in it. Then put a new sock on the last bad pump, and it turns out the pump is fine. Still fine almost a year after I barely managed to limp into my parents' drive way going 20mph bucking and backfiring. A plugged up sock makes the pump run loud and flow less fuel. No way to diagnose between a plugged sock and a bad pump without replacing the sock to try it. ratrapp
i hate to say it but you should bite the bullet and replace the tank.i had to about 6 years ago.i didn't realize how much crap was inside my tank.i also went through 3 pumps ina year and a half before replacing the tank.the first 2 were mopar pumps as well. Disturbed
I just bought a new tank, about $150 to my door. If you are going through pumps that fast the $150 investment seems like the smart move. The tank came bare steel so I am wondering if I should paint the outside of the tank before I install it? Any input?
mvusse
Tank is probably galvanized steel. You can paint it if you like, but it won't make much of a difference if you don't.
Wildman
I'd say........Paint the new tank, but use this product - http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp?fr ... d=55&SBL=1 It's resistant to gas :brows: Or, go full out with this product - http://www.por15.com/SPECIAL-Sealer-Met ... tinfo/S7Q/
cluricaunne
there are three relays just behind my battery, which one of them is the fuel pump relay??
Wildman
If you have only 3 relays, it would be the middle one for the fuel pump.

cluricaunne
I get better prices at my local parts stores, being a vendor and all. I can get the pump for 69 and the filter for 6.50. The fuel tank I can get used for $30 or just get one off ebay for 100 or so. Rock Auto is a great place if you can't get vendor pricing though. cluricaunne
Spent all weekend working on it, finally figured out the problem. Water in the tank. Had to drop the tank, drain it, clean it, and clean out the lines. Everything is working fine now, so I can drive it through the winter, and then get back to restoring it. Shandley
That's great! Congrats on keeping the rare. Say, how does water get into the tank?
cluricaunne
different ways, condensation, weather changes, even when you fill up at the gas pumps. Normally its in small amounts, and just burns off with the fuel, and I do recommend using: it helps a lot. Unfortunately, I wasn't using it, and collected a bit more water than the fuel system could process...
