bigalpha
After a close call with another vehicle, I started thinking about my seatbelt. Had I t-boned that person, my face would have ended up on the steering wheel. When did Jeep start with locking seat belts? neither one in my '88 lock. dasbulliwagen
My 87 has locking belts, maybe yours are just bad. You should just go look for a set that works properly. Not sure if front belts from similar year Cherokee would work or not, maybe someone else will know that. I think sometimes the inertia lock on the retractors gets froze up from dirt or rust and they stop working. Good Luck.
bigalpha
Is the interia lock in the assy something that can be cleaned/lubed, or will I have to replace with new?
dasbulliwagen
I'm not sure, Ive never really had one out or apart, I just know thee basic workings. Sorry. I don't have one near me right now either to be able to tell you if it comes apart. I would just find a good used set.

Geonovast
I'm 99% sure XJ and MJ belts are different.

shelbyluvv
They are different. When I tore my truck down the seat belts did not work. The mechanisms were full of lint and gunk. I cleaned them up and they worked like new.
bigalpha
Nice. I'll take a look at mine and see if I can get them cleaned and lubed.
