4play
Hi. I just bought my first MJ. I have previously owned a CJ 8 and a YJ. My problem is finding parts. I have several catalogs in the house and internet sites bookmarked for Jeep items, but they all seem to deal with CJs and the occasional XJ. From a bit of reading here, it seems XJ parts cross to MJ. Is this correct? Or did I misread? I have an immediate need for a fuel tank but am having a hard time locating one. This truck spent most of it's life in Michigan (then moved to Fl and is now with me in SC) and is covered in rust, including the fuel tank. I found out the hard way while trying to fill more than 1/2 the tank, several leaks. I have an '87, auto, air, I6. Not sure of other details yet. (I bought it for $700. after working a double shift, in a rush to get a bit of sleep before going back to work.) I finally have a day off, want to work on it, and can't find anyone who stocks parts. Thanks in advance for your help and support.
JOMJ87
I would buy a fuel cell if i was you But thats me. A fuel cell would be easy to mount since you can stick it in the bed and strap it down.I'm pretty certain the XJ tanks are different from MJ so that is a no go. I'm sure someone knows where to buy stock parts like this from i just thought i would throw the cell idea in. Where are you located in SC??? I'm stationed at Shaw AFB in Sumter. pingpong
If you look on ebay there is a company that sells them.... I think with shipping they are around 100 bucks. Just make sure you put a new fuel pump and filter on it when you do the swap. I have a brand new one sitting in my Gaarage that I no longer need... so let me know if you are intesrested.... I need to get rid of it.. as it is in my way
87manche
the Mj is XJ from the front doors forward. Aft of the cab is where parts get really hard to find. Make sure you get a LWB gas tank, it is a different size and mount from the SWB tank. My LWB tank is 23 gallons or there abouts.
4play
Partially good news, I had a chance to put my truck on a lift to examine the exhaust. It seems that the fuel leaks are from lines and around the pump, not the actual tank itself. The tank has been patched before, so a complete replacement tank is not an immediate need (I hope). And I was pleasantly surprised that things weren't quite as rusted out as I had expected. I spent a good bit of today at the DMV, now to get the fuel leak stopped so I can get a muffler, exhaust pipe, and hangers installed. I guess an oil change, diff. gaskets, and tune up would be in order too. As for a fuel cell, that could be an asnwer, but this truck is aslo my daily driver and I would prefer to leave the bed empty for hauling purposes. Oh, I am in Walhalla - near Clemson and Greenville. Eagle
I have the same problem on my '87. I replaced the tank, drove to the gas station to fill up, and promptly pumped several gallons of gas onto the pavement. What seems to happen is the brazed or soldered joint where the metal elbows pass through the fuel pump mounting flange cracks, allowing gas to flow out when it reaches that level. I don't recall if it was here or on the NAXJA forum, but someone suggested cleaning up the outside really well and then sealing the joint with a collar of JB-Weld. That's what I'm going to try next. pingpong
JOMJ87 said just use a fuel cell. I put one on my truggy, and it isnt as cheap as some ppl think to run a fuel cell correctly. First there is the cost of the cell... then you need an fittings, and rubber hose... did I mention an aftermarket fuel pump, cause your stock one won't work with new tank w/o serious mods... then there is building a suitable mounting system. NOt exactly as easy as picking up the phone and ordering one of the net
JOMJ87
The only reason i had suggested a fuel cell is i didnt know how big the aftermarket was about having stock gas tanks. I was just thinking its alot easier to find one than find a stocker. And if its a DD you could get a huge tank and not have to stp so much but your guage will be off. I agree that they are not as easy as thought out to be me and a friend put one in a TJ and ran in to all kinds of trouble and we had to rethink our original idea several times. Good luck with the fix. PS i am originally from Brevard NC which is right above Greenville so i know exactly where you are. Cole

JFD
The quarters for the xj 2 door will fitthe mj, just not as a complete replacement. $300.00 bucks though?
Eagle
The quarters for the xj 2 door will fitthe mj, just not as a complete replacement. $300.00 bucks though? Define "fit" please. Considering that the MJ wheel arches are both longer and higher than the XJ, and the height from the bottom of the panel to the first body crease is different, I wouldn't say that an XJ panel will "fit" an MJ. I suppose in an emergency it could be made to work, but it'll look like hell. A friend of mine patched up his MJ using XJ quarters, so I can attest first-hand to how bad the end result was. It got him through the state safety inspection, but that's the ONLY good thing that could be said for it.
JFD
That's odd, A buddy of mine has the same year 2door cherokee as my comanche (90) and the panels were the same dimensions...maybe a different year? we measured them with the vehicles sitting right next to each other. They wouldn't be long enough to replace the whole panel. I'm in the same boat as your friend in that I have some nasty rust around the wheel wells and a state inspection due in August, I'll probably just use sheetmetal patches.
