I was to the point where I was able to change a front shaft on my rig in less then 20 minutes from breakage :eek:

 

I make it a point to carry at least one of every bolt size My rig using on the suspension. :brows: You never know what you are going to break or loose when you are making a trail repair :mad:

 

Air tools, and CO2 tanks are great for camp repairs, but On my rig there is just no storage anymore, so that stuff gets left at the tow rig

The best and worst thing about wheeling with a truck bed. :D There's always room for more.

You will find that your rig handles and flexes a lot better with less gear :brows: Also if you are going to carry as much gear as you do... Try and keep it as low and to the center as possible

I know that everyone has a horror story or 2 about the dana 35, but why do we never here about the dana 30's? Are the front axels in our comanches and xj's really just that much stronger?

It has to do with the forces as they are go from the pinion gear to the ring gear. On identically equipped axles, high pinion fronts are stronger than low pinion fronts and low pinion rears are stonger than high pinion rears. Plus a rear axle has to be stronger than a front axle since there's typically more force on the rear axle when you get on the throttle. Like when climbing a hill, the rear axle has the majority of the vehicle's weight on it due to weight transfer. Plus, the rear axle is used all the time, while the front axle is only used when you're in 4wd so there's a long-term wear thing going on.

Hmmm :hmm: , my theory was exactly the opposite. I'm thinking that the extra weight I have forces the suspension to follow the terrain rather than lift a tire.

I have plenty of front axle horror stories :brows:

 

The same trip to tellico I bent my front d30, destroyed a lockright, and busted a short side shaft :eek: I just went to Paragon in May and busted a yukon alloy short side shaft, watched another guy bust a short side on his rig.. Then watched a dude in a Rubi bust a short side on his front D44 :eek: Made a real nice sound when that let go driving yeahthat.gif

 

Also the d30 has more mounting points, and there are less instances of ppl bending tubes on them. I am the only person in my club who can say " I bent a d30 housing", but I know of at least 4 other ppl who can say they twisted, or bent a d35 :eek:

I agree with Pete on this one.

 

My thoughts are:

Dump truck leaves on a Samurai won't flex for anything. The light weight of the vehicle doesn't allow the springs to flex. Adding weight, in a sense, is like creating a new spring rate, allowing the springs to flex with less effort.

 

That's why I, personally, like to pull leaves, cause I'm not gonna add weight to my vehicle if I don't have to. I don't have enough power, gas is too expensive, and I hate high centers of gravity.

Pete you might be right.... :dunno: but after I dumped the bed and all the crap I carried in my rig.... it felt like I had more power.. Yes I have had to pull a leaf out my pack, but that was cause they were custom built Alcans and they ask you to weigh your rig, and where you keep the weight

after driving a 4 cyl yj with 33's, I actually liked the challenge of having a lack of power for obstacles, made the dunes n e way a lot more fun. extra power is always a plus though. not really sure what it would be like to wheel an MJ with little power...

 

actually i don't really know what its like to wheel an mj at all, i've on done XJ. Should be a lot of fun next summer!

The word is: nuthin'. Well, almost nothing. The hornets are dead, the truck is *near* the garage, but the heat/humidity has made progress slow. Very very slow. Today I hope to clear out the garage and start ripping out the interior. The real bummer is that this weekend is supposed to be nice, but we were planning a trip down to Georgia to visit my sister. What a dilema! :cry:

hmmmm...family or Manche??? seems to be becoming the story of my life. I'm going to go ahead and say put it on a trailer and bring it with, then eveyone is happy

Except that I don't own a trailer or have access to a vehicle that can pull an MJ on a trailer. Technically the '90 runs and drives, just the clutch line is blown. I can get it running by putting it in first and cranking until it leaps to life. :D

you could have the trans and clutch out of my 89. who wants a 5sp n e ways? NO idea if it is working properly or not...or if I will ever need it lol :wrench:

I have an external slave bellhousing I'm hoping to swap in and make work. No idea if the parts that came with it work though. :roll:
