There's tube that runs from under the intake manifold up to the air filter box. I looked it up and I guess it's supposed to let warm air mix with the cold to get an optimal temp? Well, this tube is pretty shot, and it's not even connected to the air box. Is it really necessary? Does it improve performance/gas mileage?

The tube allows the engine to perform better until it warms up.

 

Is it needed? Yes and no. If you have emissions testing where you are it can fail a visual inspection because of the tube being gone.

 

You can usually pick a replacement up at most parts houses for a small fee.
