I think my starter went bad last night, my batt. tested good, and my alt. tested good, and my truck still won't start. So what is the best way to test the starter?

remove it and take it to a parts store where they can test it (NAPA, Autozone, Advance etc.)

how hard is it to remove?

two bolts into the bellhousing, one + battery wire, and one ignition wire.

of course, disconnect the battery first.

and..it may just be dirty connections. have you ever cleaned them all?

now that i think about it, i don't think i have since i got the truck...but it has been running fine since i bought it so i prob just didnt think about it

Two bolts should hold it up. I had a problem once with those two loosening, but that's neither here nor there.

Do you have 12 volts at the starter? Do you here the starter relay in the engine bay click?

I would start tracking the electricity. See if it's getting to the starter relay. See if it's getting past the starter relay.

Your truck's automatic, isn't it?

ah. Marcel, I see where you're going with this

Yea.......you guys started it........but didn't finish it

If your MJ is automatic, take it out of Park, into Neutral and see if it will start (turn the starter over) Run the gear selector up and down a couple of times and back into Park and see if it will turn the starter.

If it dose, your NSS is sticking. Or, you just didn't have the gear selector in the perfect spot, and it's shorting out the starter relay, the safety feature for not starting the truck in gear.

It could be just the gear selector not set just right, or.......your NSS needs cleaning.

I do not mean to jump on this thread about this but Does a starter out of a 5 speed work for the auto trans or is it different?

I know they are different nose cones on Chev's but do not know aout the jeep.

I would like to take the starter out of the 5 speed truck and put it in the auto so I can move it in the yard if I can that is why I am asking.

THanks for any help.

There is no difference between the auto and manual starter for the 4.0 engine.

The 4.0 and 2.5 starters are different.

There all Mitsubishi based starters.

And.........The cross check- for the 4.0-

thanks I am going out to the Mj to see if I can strat it up.

Worked great was able to start the 89 and move it out of the garage and then move the 90 after puting the starter on so they are lined up ready to be made into one.
