what year for donor? engine swap Q's

Recommended Posts

:help:

i have a '86 2.5L with a headgasket (? i think?) problem. i have a chance to get a '88 XJ 4.0, auto for cheap, cause it's rusty. is this a good year? bad year? does it matter?

i know it would not be a H.O. motor, so my next question: what's the differences between a 4.0 and a 4.0 H.O. ??

:dunno:

thanx

A 4.0 HO has an ignition system based on a Chrysler ECM, the older 4.0 has an ignition system based on a Renix ECM. There are other changes on the HO also, to provide better airflow through the heads, a little different cam and some other stuff. The 1987 4.0 makes 173 hp. 88 through 90 makes 177 through larger fuel injectors, and the HO ones make 190 with the torque peak a bit higher I believe.

Mechanically, they are basically still the same engine, and you could start an endless debate about which one is actually better.

A bigger problem is that the 86 fire wall was never designed for a 4.0, meaning you may have to make a 1/2" or 3/4" modification with a hammer to make the engine clear it. Still not a terribly big problem...

Yeah ... like about 2,000 RPM higher. IIRC the Renix torque peak was 2,250 RPM. The HO torque eak was 4,000 RPM.

Further proving that Chrysler Corporation had zero understanding of what a Jeep really is when they bought Jeep from AMC.

okay, here's a can of worms for everyone....

anybody ever done or seen a diesel swapped into a MJ? i absolutly love diesels, it is a horrible, sick fetish of mine that I'm not afraid to admit. i know there are kits available ( somewhere) to swap a VW disel into a 'yoda, so worst case (as far as parts availbility) get a 'yoda bell housing to bolt onto the AX tranny.

 :brows:

or is just another crazy thought of mine that is proving that i shouldn't have quit drinking.
