Can also be worn bearings and/ or just a really beaten up transmission with high mileage as was the case with my CJ w/ the T5. Did the same thing you described. End result was a badly needed rebuild.

Well i guess the PO was mistaken when he told me he had rebuilt the tranny & TC.

Anyhow I just got a line on 93 XJ with only 66000 Kilometers :Canadaflag: for only $700. Its been sitting on our friends land for the last 5 years and he will be happy to get rid of it.

Since they stopped making the previous stuff (which was super expensive anyways), the new recommendation from Jeep is to use regular engine oil. 10w40 I think. There are sulphor compounds in the GL-5 gear oils that eat yellow metals.
