Hello All, I've been researching valve cover replacements. I've still got a lot of research to do, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any good experiences with aftermarket VCs? I have a 1987 2.5L. Some of the posts about this topic are over 10 years old. In those, people tend to talk about finding a VC at the JY. But doing some searching on the old Googles, I'm seeing that Crown Automotive claims to offer an aluminum aftermarket solution. I really know nothing about this, but I'm a little worried it's too good to be true, especially because it costs less than $50 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Crown-Automotive-33003857-Valve-Cover/dp/B008VPWLRG Any chance this might work? If not, what should I look for? Mine is currently leaking. Not badly, but I want to eventually fix it. Anything else I should be worried about? Like... if I've been driving it with a leaking VC for years and I suddenly seal that up tight, could it lead to other issues? I'd really hate to blow my head gasket. Then again, there's a high likelihood that my HG has never been replaced. Maybe it's only a matter of time.

I had my valve cover gasket replaced by the 4x4 shop down the street here and all was good for a while then I started to notice it leaking more and more oil. So I went to pull the cover off and noticed that my suspicions were correct the cover was cracked were it bolts on. No biggie I thought just get a new one. Even being disabled I can definitely handle putting a new one on myself. So I ordered one from Quadratec it was the right valve cover but did not fit on right and was apparently warped on the straight side after contacting their customer service they said no problem we will send out another one and they did just got and tried putting it on but the pre-made gasket beed was not lining up with mounting surface and i was not even going to try to put it on as it would have leaked all over the place. So I'm sending this one back too.I got the new gasket before I found the old cover was cracked thinking it would just need a new gasket...so in my looking for new valve cover I have found that none of the online vendors have one without that pre-made gasket built in. Which I think is a great concept but there is no way of making sure its going to mate up right. So I am looking for an old school used or new valve cover that is in good shape without that pre-made gasket crap built into it as I have the new gasket and want to install it the right way. . :MJ 2: .

I have only been on this site for a little bit and haven't posted enough things to create a classified listing yet, but I am looking to convert to the aluminum cover for my 2.5L. I don't have many options for junkyards around here and haven't found a suitable donor yet and am wondering if anyone has one they can part with or can point me in the right direction to find one. I've seen for the gasket to use a FelPro vs50502r and a cover from a 93- YJ or a Dakota with a 2.5. I haven't been able to locate any of those valve covers online anywhere either though.

Anyone know torque specs on the following: Timing chain cover Oil Pan valve cover Got some fel-pro gaskets and hope to get these installed this weekend. I think the Valve cover is 55 inch pounds,... Also replacing the harmonic balancer and chain cover, I'll get the puller tool for the balancer. Anything special I need to know or look out for on this job? I'm not going to mess up the timing am I?

Hello all, I am a proud new owner of a '87 2.5l 4X4 4-speed. I recently picked up this MJ in Albuquerque, NM, and immediately drove it home to NH coast without a single problem along the way. Well, there was one thing...the valve cover leaked a little. Today I replaced the valve cover, using a little RTV and one of those rubber gaskets. I scrubbed the hell outta the cover, getting all the years of gunk out of the two pathways where the two hoses plug in. When I started it up after replacing the gasket and letting it sit for 6-7 hours, It sounded terrible...a low stumbly kind of idle, with very strong exhaust fumes coming from seemingly everywhere. I visually checked for leaks, but i couldn't find any apparent ones. I also changed the oil today, and the truck took about 4.5 quarts. Is there something I could have knocked loose or something else that needs to be cleaned after clearing those ports on the top of the valve cover? I am at a loss here. I;m gonna let it sit over night and check all the seals again tomorrow. Any advice would be much appreciated. -Frollix
