  1. 1987 Comanche long bed 4.0l Manuel 5 spd, Dana 35 and Dana 30. 3 inch RC lift, 31 bfg ATs Alright, so I've learned a lot about axle swaps but now that I'm looking for a 8.8 out of an explorer, I just want to know what is completely involved. I've looked at some other posts and stuff so I have a rough idea. What do I need get to do this? What do I need to do? Is it simple enough? What cutting and welding and fabricating is involved? Should I get the axle beefed up with a truss while its out? What gears should I do and how much are they? What shafts? Brakes? Ect? Thanks please don't tell me that I shouldn't does this or some other thing about money. I just want to see what's involved and if I want to do this. I have my reasons why and it's also just a learning experience for me, So if you can just answer with a straight forward answers. Thanks
  2. So I have 1987 jeep Comanche long bed with the 4.0l i6 Dana 30 upfront 35 in the rear, 31inch bfg AT, winch, bumper, lift, led bar, and I want bigger axles. I know Dana 30s are good and 35s suck so I want to upgrade to 44s all around. I'm handy with tools and stuff so I want to do this myself. I just need to know what size to buy and what else I need to know. I saw something about WMS. What size do I want for mine? Driveshaft? I just need to know all the things I need for a swap like this. thanks
  3. I have a dilemma I can't quite figure out, hope some of you can chime in. I currently have a non c clip dana 35, it has a bad yoke that needs replacing. It has drum brakes. I want disc brakes, as seen in my build thread I scored ZJ backing plates. These aren't a bolt on affair on non C clip axles, I don't want to mess with redrilling holes and adding a spacer plate. So I need a newer rear axle. I forgot to check the gearing in my front diff last time I had it open, I'm assuming that with a 2.5 ax5 combo I have 4.10 in both diffs.(?) Initially, I wanted a 29 spline 8.25 chrysler to put in the rear. Turns out that those axles are super hard to find with 4.10, and expensive. Ford 8.8 is just not available in Holland, plus I would like to stick with a chrysler or Dana option. My current thought, a c clip dana 35 is easier to find with 4.10. I already know where I can find one. I will never run tires bigger than 29-30", will never do more than mall crawling and DD'ing. A dana 35 should work for me. Also, if i'm correct I will not have to shorten my current driveshaft when I put in a c clip dana 35, correct? Problem is, the JY could not tell me if the backing plates came off a V8 or the i6. I.e. dana 35 or 44a. Is there a difference in backing plates on rear axles for that? I can't find a reference picture anywhere. If they came from a dana 35, I believe it's a straight bolt on. Bottomline, I really like the idea of swapping in a c clip dana 35 but I don't know if my backing plates will fit. Also, if it turns out I have 3.55 gearing, there's an 8.25 waiting for me but I'd hate to have to spend money on driveshaft shortening and balancing.
  4. Coming home tonight and went around a corner and then had a grind and then a boom sound from somewhere in the rear end. After that I had no power and ended up stuck on the side of the road. I've been able to narrow it down to somewhere in my rear axle, but am not sure exactly where. I have a Dana 35. In 2wd the driveshaft will spin but nothing in the axle seems to move. Luckily i wasn't to far from home and was able to drive home in 4wd. When its parked and in neutral, the driveshaft can spin able which i know isn't good. Could it be a ring or pinion gear or possibly a axle shaft? Would it be easier to just rebuild the axle or am I better of trying to find something at Pick-N-Pull? I'm on a high school budget, so I can't go to extreme. Also, is the Dana 35 a floating or partial floating axle? Thanks in advance I need all the help i can get. :help:
  5. I am in dire need to replace my rear axle. I just moved to the South Texas Area and upon arrival I was greeted with shreaded spider gears in the dif. So as my MJ was my daily driver, I need to get her fixed! If anyone in my area has a Dana 35 Axle for sale, I will come a running! Here is the current specs off the plate on the pumpkin...... or if you happen to have a better solution (other then junk yard) please let me know. the plate reads 53004770 3.08 605324-1 Thanks guys!
