'Big Ton'/'Metric Tonne' Conversion
Maveric replied to Maveric's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
and see where my curiosity gets me? lol, here iam going next on project list...install rear speakers....install factory cargo light....fix headliner fabric...paint exterior....get new chrome stick mirrors... now with my curiosity i have an even bigger list... so that leaves me with, how hard is it to convert over to the nice ax15? find a dana 44? the springs, and all the rest of it....how much would it cost? and how long would it take me to do it? since I'm not mechanically inclined what would it cost for me to buddy up to one of you with beer? :brows: and the biggest question of all (but the answer never really matters) would i really need it as a dd? and is there anyone else in texas? or am i the alone lone star mj'er? (as it would be fun to get together with other mj'ers) *comancheclub.com where the beers, dreams, and conversations never run out* -
'Big Ton'/'Metric Tonne' Conversion
Maveric replied to Maveric's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
well its a 5 speed standard shift (stick for you automatic guys) ba-10? don't really know, if its an asin or not, if it isnt i should post "how to put an ax-15 in a 1988 pioneer mj" or something. so springs, shocks, etc...running cost and rarity? too much? sometimes my curiosity runs amok. *downs another beer* -
Just out of curiosity more then actual doing... What would it require to update a 1988 longbed pioneer mj to the 'big ton'/'metric tonne' package, has to be more then springs right? Just curious, no real need for it (at least i don't think so) unless its a real easy job (which it probably isnt) and i know yall are informed more then i about these things... sometimes I feel like I'm a new truck owner, new to the truck and the mysteries of the dealership. *oh how I wish I could walk into a dealership and buy a new mj......one day....i hope*

Anyone know where to find replacement Olympic decals for the 88 Comanches? just wondering if someone found a reproduction site, or something. I know theres a guy out there that makes new stickers for the side, but i don't think he does the olympic ones. just curious considering i have an 88 and i am going to get it painted soon, and i would need new decals (only got one on the driver side now....)

writing a letter would bring there attention to the matter, a letter to a senator does jack, because for one its not a business, and secondly thats typical government for you, and thirdly to get a senator to work in your letter you have to cut them a big check, i don't think you need to do that for a company. i think it would work, i think that without compition from other internal divisions you wouldn't another comanche vs dakota hell, sears being sears, could provide singularity for jeep, which is what jeep needs. again my two cents, and if you keep this up you'll be rich.
-
well besides hijacking my thread :headpop: you miss my point guy, what did you do read the last line then post, yeah the jeep line is well known, and its best time was in the late 80's and 90's, why would sears not want a well known company that its peak was in that time? and i read the other post on this subject, and someone said toyota would be a better choice, toyota? eeeew, like i said jeep line and sears then we would still be driving what we allready do, you people need to think more and hijack less. sears has the money they could do it, everyone else buying out jeep would just screw it over more, which is what i ment by killing it, most of what they roll of the assembly line now i wouldn't drive, so in a way its already lost alot of customer base I can't be the only one to think this. After all would you trail a plastic looking hot wheels car that to me dosent look like it could take any damage let alone have the ability to go off road, or would you take the cherokee which sold for how many years? they canned it in 01-02? wasent that after mecedes purchased crysler? and they where selling in that body style since what early 80's? lee iakoka from ford when he went to crysler when it was failing back in the 80's "you have to buy jeep, even if you have to buy amc" so crysler bought amc just to get to jeep, so you tell me, what modern car company that isnt allready affiliated with its own suvs and trucks will not make it the same crap that they allready produce, or similar plasticized models? noting is better then jeep back in the day, yeah i may be wishing that they would have kept the comanche, yeah i may be looking back and saying "gee wheres the good old days" but maybe, maybe by god if sears would buy it, the well known jeep that i used to love and many people used to love, would come back again. so you tell me that crysler won't keep trying to screw the jeep line over, and you tell me that any other car company won't do the same, but do you really think they won't? thats my two cents
-
My sugestion for the new owners of jeep should be sears, after all they had a car company once before crosley for you people that are too young, and jeep lovers really don't want any change in their vehicles, which is like sears people don't want change in what they buy, perhaps jeep owners and sears buyers happen to be the same, but my two cents is it would be a match in heaven, sears would have never gotten rid of the cherokee, or the comanche, and unlike mercedes they wouldnt have tried to appeal to the current young market, after all if i'm going to buy a jeep i want a jeep not a plastic p.o.s, after all AMC had some great ideas and that great little 4.0L engine. Besides who has money? the young or the older crowd? and who can get a loan easier? just saying that its common sense for jeep to stop this 20 inch rim and thin tires crap and give me a cheap jeep i can beat, and when its beat ill get a new one like the old one. also sears has auto centers at every sears, so service wouldn't be a problem, and the huge lots at sears you could easily convert some over for a new car lot. besides craftsman tools are known for their reliability, also the appliances sears sells are known to last along time, so if they get jeep its just another stable market. i think that it would be better then AM General or any other car company taking it over, because they would end up killing most of the line off because of compitition, or make it look like other crap they allready sell. thats my two cents, what do you think? should we write letters to sears and the investment company that now owns jeep?

I'd go for the Audi, but the one i owned was an '85 4000 s which ran like a dream, but major problem with foreign cars, parts = expensive, and my other thought is, if you don't need a truck, why are you looking at buying a truck? kind of pointless to me. As for the Landrover, its great if you're British, or someone who thinks their high class, and wants to get their butt kicked, remember landrover is just a glorified jeep. thats my two cents.

well I agree with most of y'all on this subject, sounds like typical forum drama, and you see too much of that, this place is more like a bunch of friends with a common interest getting together and BSing, and haven't any of you heard not to mix your friends with other friends? my 'manche club pals I would think anything Jeep would suffice, if i was on a gun forum I'd talk about guns, and although you can have a comanche and a gun at the same time i wouldnt mix friends. thats like mixing your drinking buddies with your non-drinking buddies. now if i start talking in a british accent, don't act suprized. :laughin: now me chums, lets all get together and 'ave ourselves a pint

I average 65mph and get around 20-22 mpg, my dad in his xj driving from Seattle to Sacramento got up to around 24-26 mpg. So yeah I agree with the rest of y'all, my '85 Audi 4000 got over 30 in its little 4cyl engine, it was a fun car to drive, had performance for a 4cyl but I don't expect my truck to do that well, for one its a truck, two its bigger then the Audi, and three it can offroad, four its got a bigger engine. You want to save gas, buy an Audi or something, you want to actually take something offroad once in awhile, buy a jeep and loose the extra wee bit gas. here's to the jeep, and the Audi that I sold to get it. Jeep on!

Well to each his own, I only spend a thousand on mine, its got 172k everything runs great, doesn't need anything more then tires and brakes, the only other owner was a mechanic and he kept that truck in pristine condition. So yeah, if you want a full restoration on a truck then spend the money, but I feel that these trucks most of them just need a decent paint job, unless they come from snow country, then they probably need bodywork since they're rusted out, I don't live in snow country, I didn't ask when I started this post for a full restoration bodywork estimate, as again I don't have a rust bucket of a truck that needs that kind of work, so I will put it simply, daily driver paint on a truck thats rust and ding free. That shouldn't cost 3 grand to paint, thats all I'm stating. So if you're happy with a full restoration on a truck that may or may not have been worth it, so be it. As for 90% of us out there, we just need a decent paint job.
-
so you bought a junk yard special and then spent too much trying to fix it up, instead of parting it out, sounds like it needed so much body work it wasn't worth fixing up, my truck just needs paint, no real dings, dents, or rust. As for removing what paint is on it, you have three options, chemical removing, sandpapering, and sandblasting. What most cheap body shops do is chemical removing, it usually doesn't work too well and leaves you with a crappy job, sandpapering is cheaper, you can do it yourself, its just time consuming process, which costs more then the chemical removal so body shops will charge you more, sandblasting can be the easiest and best way to remove every ounce of paint from your truck, theres many levels of sandblasting from basic clear coat removal down to bare metal, each have their own relative costs, so yeah bud, you get what you paid for, but sometimes you just buy a truck that isn't worth fixing up, so you keep telling yourself that sinking 3k in a 200 dollar rust bucket was such a good idea, when in all reality you should have parted it out and made enough money to buy a better comanche.

3 grand for a paint job? thats all I need, a paint job, and 3 grand for it?!? sheesh no wonder Crysler said 92 and up, if it costs THAT much they would have been losing a lot of money. and what kind of deal was that? :deal: I think you may have possibly got screwed, but then again it sounds like you had body work to do, I just need paint.
-
you know that bumper doesn't actually look duckbillish it actually makes the car look more like Jay Leno...thats my opinion anyway. I'm also guessing the license plate hung above that hole? although it would look pretty interesting to hang over the hole...

We all know that Jeep paint sucks (whats left of it) but some of out there want to repaint them, perhaps back to the factory color. Some of us have seen websites mentioning that if you're the first or the second, possibly the third owner of your Jeep and its within so many years, that Crysler will repaint it :deal: but I think many of us don't fall under this rule. So what happens to us? we either do the ol' rattle can or we go to someplace and get a cheap crappy paint job (Earl Sheib) but then we start to bash our heads into the wall because of the bad paint :wall: I'm from California, my truck was built in 1988, and I am the second owner, yet the class action suit fell under 1992 cars and up...I am at peace with that decision, but I still wish I had a decent paint job. :( So what are our options? do we go for a local guy and get a deal? or do we try for a corporation like sheib or miracle? any suggestions?
-
gee, whats with the floor problems? i would just put plexiglass over the whole so you can get that glass bottom car...oooh look at all the reflectors :laughin:
-
who wouldn't want that bumper? why wasn't it more popular? did they charge a fortune? and why did they replace comanche's with that stupid and over priced dakota? here's to the hidden winch bumper, and the true truck of all time, the comanche. It's easy to be a truck, it's hard to be a Jeep

where could i get the vinyl replacement for the other side? and no one has made any comments on where to get that painted the same...and how rare is that paint? anyone know the AMC/Crysler paint chip code thingy?
-
yeah, the pictures are of nice things, like the tailgate and the symbols, stuff like that... too bad i can't hot link them...oh well, if ya can see them congrats if not....don't know what to tell ya. anyway that darkish blue gray paint is mine, now if i can find someone to paint it the same...any suggestions? and any idea how i can get the factory bed light assembly hooked up? that is if i find one in the yard (hah)
-
hopefully it works this time.' alt='>hopefully it works this time.'>
-
A better shot of my paint color, and a wee bit of the original vinyl, now if I can get that replaced...possibly...anyone have an opinion on that? also I was thinking of replacing the JEEP lettering in the back with solid gold ones, think jeepsticker.com could do that? of course this thread has gone from factory upgrades, to paint...odd that
-
dark blue with just enough gray to throw it off of actual blue, http://www.myspace.com/166059510 theres a pic of it on there, and my blogs on what I'm doing with it.
-
went to earl sheib today, didn't like their paint options, anyone know anyone else that can match the factory blue and do a really good job? you know how jeeps are with their paint.
-
guess I need to go to Chille, or get it modded, now if i can get the fog lights, bed light, brush guard, sport bar, bed cover, factory rubber bed liner, and all the other extras that would be really cool. I bet ya if someone made these bumpers custom, in their spare time, they could fetch a good amount of money. anyone know of any other factory upgrades? gotta love the factory mods
-
I don't know if i should put this here or not, its just wishful thinking... I was looking through my Comanche manual and I noticed some upgrades that they had, like a factory hidden winch front bumper, brush guard, etc. I was wondering how rare is that sorta stuff? could I find it anywhere, factory or OEM doesn't matter much. also, how screwed up can a speedometer get with tires that are LT235 instead of what it rolled of with from the factory? (P215) and the manual said that the max was 225 so could I use those instead of the 215?
