breaking into your vehicle (lost keys)
Dedaw replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Apparently, I'm too stupid to figure out the coat hanger trick OR the slider trick. Could not get the slider to unlock, nor could I find the locking mechanism with the coat hanger. Lucky for me, I have AAA; and the guy still took 25+ minutes and couldn't unlock it with a slim jim either. However, I was 80+ miles away from where I was supposed to be. Waiting for the lockout to show up on the bill and get bitched at. :teehee: Another idea, one I need to steal from my buddy, he put an old piece of metal banding in the back of his truck with a notch cut out just like on a slim jim. Looks just like a piece of scrap, but makes a handy lock-out tool. -
Not sure :dunno: Manual says to use 75w-90 though.

As far as I know with my truck, it has 135k miles without the gear oil being replaced. I've heard that it won't harm anything to change the oil, and have also heard it can be the final thing to push my tranny over the edge. It does not like shifting smoothly into second, and often will not shift into reverse without some muscle. Want to try the oil before clutch and/or new tranny.

If you had a rod knock, what would you do?

Dad's mechanic friend says that it is VERY common for these trucks to get a slight knock, and that it's just the wristpin and I should get easily another 100k out of it. :dunno: So, I'm going to do my regular oil change, swap for 1qt Lucas, and go from there. Still thinking of doing an engine transplant (or sell it for a Cummins, pending on a long-shot move to Montana), but that will wait 'til I pay off the rest of my loan and get a good lift in here. -
I, personally, love it! I'm sure there are some kinks to be worked out still. However, IPB is a much better platform to work with, I think. Looking forward to what's to come.  This guy used to be my favorite. And now I have him again!!      EDIT: First thing I've noticed, the only BB codes for smilies do not seem to work. Old threads have the  code, but no emoticon. :dunno:

Be sure to check it out  any recollection of whether or not it was TDI? Those seem to be more common, and a lot more tedious.

@red; I thought the same. Nice to have something out of the ordinary. @mnky; From what I've read so far, I can get pretty close to the same HP as my 4.0 as well as better torque and a better low-end torque. Much more so if I were to cough up for a TDI.

I see 41 views, and only person has responded. Love some inputs from y'all.

I can't afford the 8 grand+ as well as the time to do a 4bt. I WILL do a 4BT (or more likely 6BT) swap in the future. Most likely not in this truck or anytime soon. Unless of course, I just happen to come across one for next to nothing. ;)

Save money compared to what?

No choice at the moment lol. I will drive her until she kicks the bucket or I get a new engine. -
IPS boards are the sex. And I can finally browse the site easily on my phone? Oh, praise Jesus!

Oh $#!&, another thread. :wrench: Talking to my brother-in-law last week got me really thinking. I had given up on the idea of a 4BT in my truck thanks to the wonderful advice from you guys. The cost, time, and PITA of it was not worth it for a daily driver. Now, a wheeler or tow rig, a BT series is still definitely a very good possibility. Anyways, he looks at me half-joking and asks "why don't you toss one of these in?", as he points to his 1.6L Diesel Jetta. The one swap I had completely overlooked! My first car was a VW, and I still have a soft spot for those little guys. Even wanted to put one in my car, but funds at the time did not allow. Anyhoo, I'm fairly set on a 1.6TD(not TDI) swap, unless somebody can convince me that it's worth the hassle/cost to swap in a 1.9TDI. Has anybody done or seen one of these swaps? If not, definitely not worried. Would be cool to be a first, and I've seen several successfully swapped into Yota's. Hopefully a build thread will be coming along soon, like payday soon.

So it seems the general consensus is to not drive it (lol! good luck with that :rotf: ) until I can replace or repair. Haven't dropped the pan yet, and may never do so. We shall see how soon I can get a new engine. -
I actually kinda like it...

Got offered to swap over to axles with 4.10s for free, so I will DEFINITELY do that. Did you listen to the engine noise video? Thoughts? Still think it sounds like a piston skirt, personally. -

You do realize that they put transmissions in vehicles so we can change gears, right? Sorry to be sarcastic, but there's a perception among (primarily) younger drivers that once you hit 5th gear you should never have to downshift unless you get to a stop sign or red light. Think about what an automatic would be doing on those same hills -- more than likely, downshifting, right? Then consider that an automatic has 3.55 axle gears and your 5-speed has 3.07 axle gears. Needing to downshift when going up "decent" hills is a normal part of driving and does not necessarily indicate a problem with the engine. Yes, I do indeed realize that I'm supposed to downshift, and have no problem downshifting... that's how I was taught. But, there is no reason that I should need to downshift. My friend with a 91 V6 yota on stock axles and 33s would take that hill in 5th gear and keep accelerating, and his truck was a pile. Same with my friend running a 4 cyl ranger that is gutless as can be. He takes that hill in 5th gear no problem. EDIT: I understand that there are many many differences between my truck and these, just using them as reference points. It's not the downshifting that's the problem, it's the what FEELS like lost power to me, along with the engine noise that concerns me. Yes, the gearing could (and most likely is) a huge part of that. But, the truck just feel like it has all it's gusto when climbing that hill. -

Nuke, I did not. I will go check that today if I have time before heading out. Got a video, not the best quality, but oh well. I could not get it with changing RPMs, as the only way pick up the noise with my phone was being under the truck. If I was above, you could only hear the whistling from the cold air and fans. -6nufE_ukTU&feature=plcp -

Gonna reply to as many as I can remember since I'm on my phone. My truck is a 5-speed so that throws out the automatic diagnosis. As far as the power, it has none. I lose power going up hill, to the point where I dropped 10mph going up a decent hill, with the pedal to the floor. And the knock remains consistent and gets louder as the engine warms and rpms go up. Not "sure" it's a knock, but it's louder at the bottom side of the engine, and sounds very much so like something smacking. Might try and get a video of it if it turns out right. -

Pete: It has a "rod knock" took it to a local shop and that's what they said. As well as tons of blowby and leaking oil assumably from multiple places. Mountain: I was looking at those as well. Rather cheap. Debating if it's worth the money to stroke it, or pull a cheap ls1 and rebuild it. -

Dedaw replied to Dedaw's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm not positive it's a knock, I plan to take it to a machine shop to make sure. Either way, I plan on rebuilding or replacing just because of the shape it's in now. Stuck between a ls1 or stroking it. Both are pricy, but a stroker would be a hell of a lot easier. Thanks for all the input Thus far guys. :) -

 Where the hell do you get that estimate? I was estimating 5-6k doing all the work myself -

Transportation would obviously come first. I'd arrange it with parents' cars and carpooling to work with my best friend. Or maybe buying a cheap commuter. It's all up in the air atm. -

As the title states, I've got rod knock and want to know what you guys would do. Others' opinions are always nice when debating options. My options right now are: Sell it Drop in a used/rebuilt 4.0 Drop in a 4.6 stroker Mod a 5.3 in Mod a 4bta Cummins in or...? All of these, (except maybe the 4.0) will include the obligatory paint, lift, axles, and wheels. -
What lift kits are y'all running?
Dedaw replied to Dedaw's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Got offered 4.10s for free and a set of 31s for $150. Might have to jump on that. Buuuut, took the truck to a shop and got diagnosed a rod knock. So I'm waiting to figure out what I'm gonna do.
