we usually hang them on the LCAs. but i guess if you're taking that off it doenst work like that huh  yeah, with the ca loose, it don't hold much :) I think it is. I didn't want to spend $400+ on a name brand header so it works. only sound diff is the lack of an exhaust leak and there may be a little more power but that also could be because i cleaned the intake manifold and intake. i have wanted to start modding since i got it but had to fix the brakes and the routine maintanence stuff first. now the fun part starts. nathan

Update Went to the JY for 2 weekends now and got most of what I needed so I started the lift. Picked up my 8.8 flange adapter and some bucket seats to throw in. I was planning on putting in my old V8 zj springs and a 2" spacer for about 3" of lift for the front. Pulled the old d30 out and put the mj springs next to the zj springs, and what i found was suprising. mj on the left and zj on the right. i put them in anyway and it only lifted it maybe 3/4 of an inch. so i took them out and found these rancho or skyjacker coils on craigslist for $80 with some funky lca's. I put my 1.75" spacer in also and got about 4" of lift. the lp30 got new balljoints and i used the zj cv joint axles which were in good shape. put my old DT shocks on from my zj also. need to make some swaybar links and maybe look for a shorter front driveline. took it for a spin and it rides really nice. much firmer but comfortable. the new ball joints makes the steering so firm. the old lowers were full of dirt and very sloppy. next is front lca's and uca's hopefully from the swap meet. start the rear tomorrow by making a bastard leaf pack using s-10 springs and putting in the 8.8. later! nathan

'nother oregonian. looks nice! nathan

I agree. close off your garage with some thin plastic, put a fan in to pull out fumes and spray it. did a few cars in my garage this way. turns out better than rattle can and if you are careful, you can get a great paint job. do a single stage and wetsand when you are done. nathan

don't know, i usually just use a few sockets and a hammer to get ujoints out. use the socket the same size as the bearing cap and one big enough for the cap to go into. push one side out, pull off with pliers and take out ujoint. nathan
-
new ujoints in, vibes are gone. the truck just seems to drive better now, smoother. thanks nathan
-
took the driveline out tonight and the rear ujoint was toast. one of the bearing caps was full of metal dust  no lube in that one. the rest were fine. gonna replace both sides tomorrow. it also seems like my yoke on my tcase has more play on the splines than i think it should. might do that sye sooner than i thought. nathan

yeah, i was going to check the dline when i did the 8.8 swap. seems weird they would go suddenly like that. maybe the sudden no traction/ traction thing did them in.

picked up my 3.73 dana 30. it is a lp out of a zj but it will be fine for the 4" lift and 31's i will be running. i am keeping the hp30 for future upgrades to 33's and will regear that one later. picked up the whole axle for $50 including the shafts. i am going to run the cv shafts from the zj as i had good luck with them in my zj. i believe they are stronger than the 267s in there now. putting in new ball joints and then it's going in with the 8.8. also picked up some s10 spings to get some lift in the rear. just need the following to complete the lift 1" coil spacer 8.8 flange adaptor i will have pics as i start the lift. nathan

driving to the junkyard sat morning and going over the hill was a little icy and the jeep was spining and sliding a little going up. it would spin a little on the icy sections and then catch the dry and go up. i then tried to put it into 4hi but it wouldn't go. tried about 4 times and it would grind a little but mostly just not move, even around 15mph. i left it alone and just delt with the ice. when it cleared and it tried to speed up, i was getting these bad vibes around 1500-2000 rpms and the whole jeep feels funny. i made sure it was not stuck in 4wd as the front dline spins free. any ideas on what happened or what i should look at? rear driveline? shot tcase? thanks nathan

i used the 1.25" spidertrax spacers on my zj when it had the 8.8 in it, i didn't have any problems and used it as a dd and did lots of off road miles. i am using them again for the 8.8 going in my mj. loctite and torque them down. nathan

Lookin for info on a few diff 33s
goldtooth replied to feerocknok's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i did quite a bit of back road and off road driving in southeast, eastern and notheastern oregon in my zj and did most of it on goodyear mt/r's. drove from cali border by lakeview up to walla walla, wa over the course of 4 years, almost all gravel/trail. also had them in the northwestern mud where they were decent. good on the street and i trusted them in the sharp rocks in the east, too bad they are so expensive. probably will go with bfg at's on the mj cause they are inexpensive. nathan -
i found all the info on naxja.org. search under "apn exhaust manifold" and you should find it. i believe the web site was auto parts network or something like that. it is decent quality. nathan

i am not too worried about d shaft vibes as my zj had 4" of lift with a lp30 and the fulltime tcase. it is something to keep an eye on though
-
yeah, i am going to get the 297 shafts for it and run it with the 31's for a while. i am going to save the hp30 for a future build and eventually regear it to 4.56's for when i run 33's. i just don't want to pay for regearing to run 31's, even a lp30 will be fine. i ran a lp30 in my zj for years with 33's and it was fine, and the zj wieghs much more and had a v8. 2-3 years out, i will be running 33's with the hp30 and 8.8 nathan
-
i may have a line on a tj one for $50 without shafts. i forgot how much bigger these 8.8's are than the d35  makes me want to put 35's on now  nathan

shipping would be about $100 or so i think. what year is it? it is out of a 92 explorer, i think it is just due to the pic angles nathan

Do they happen to take credit cards at this swap meet? Where in OR are you from? Some of the vendors take CCs but the regular guys are cash only. I live in Hillsboro, just nw of Portland. It is a big event. anyone have a d30 with 3.73s in it they want to get rid of? Nathan
-
the one in puyallup in march. saving money now nathan
-
yeah, just waiting till after the big 4x4 swap meet in march. should have my lift and front axle by then. trying my best to keep this very streetable and not go nuts like i did with my zj. nathan
-
well picked up the 8.8 today. 3.73's with limited slip, drum brakes for $125 with less than 100K on it. also got the ubolts and plates. forgot to grab the ujoint adaptor  next is the front d30 to match. the jy had no hp30s with 3.73s today. new brakes! gonna buy the spring perches next week and have spacers on the way. if i can't find a decent front axle, i will just regear the one i have. still piecing together the lift and will most likely just make my own front control arms and just buy springs. i will keep you updated! nathan

32"/33" tires with 3.07s?
goldtooth replied to goldtooth's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yeah it is not the strength difference so much but the dshaft angles. this d30 will only see 32" at's max. i won't rule out a tj/zj d30 if i can't find a hp30 that matches the 8.8 i pick up. nathan -

yeah but the zj d30s are lp. i was thinking of the rustys aal and maybe an explorer leaf as i need some additional load capacity in the bed. nathan -
32"/33" tires with 3.07s?
goldtooth replied to goldtooth's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
thinking i am going to piece together the lift parts for the 4" lift and get the 32" bfg at's and run it for now. it is mostly driven in the city at this point. i am going to be picking up an 8.8 with 3.73s and will look for a cherokee d30 to match. side note, if i picked up the explorer leafs, can i piece the leaves together to get about 3" of lift from them? nathan -
http://portland.craigslist.org/yam/car/254926110.html might go look at it. priced kinda high  nathan
