Exhaust Manifold Replacement
comanche1989 replied to 54bobby's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If the bolt heads are completely broken off, you can still remove the the manifold. Then it might be possible after a few days of soaking in pb blaster to put a big pair of vice grips on them and remove them. As long as the threads aren't stripped buy new bolts and you should be okay! If you are unable to remove them with vice grips, I would suggest removing the head and either buy a new or used head or bring the head to a machine shop to get the bolts drilled out. -

First thing I would do is check and clean grounds. What were you doing when they failed? -
Exhaust Manifold Replacement
comanche1989 replied to 54bobby's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Never use easy outs. If they break you're in big trouble. Are you talking about the two bolts that connect the manifold to the downpipe? You should be able to grind them flat then drill them out.The exhaust manifold is fairly easy to replace, but somewhat time consuming. Get yourself a Chiltons and it should be able to completely explain the whole process. Make sure to spray all bolts with a penetrating catalyst like pb blaster a couple times before attempting to remove bolts! -
Hi everyone. This weekend I just threw in my rebuilt 4.0 into my 1989 Comanche with the 5 speed and hooked everything up. When I went to turn it over with the sparkplugs out to prime the system the starter solenoid just clicks. I was wondering if someone could take a picture of which wires go to which connectors on their starter so I could see if I have it wired up correctly. Thanks, Sam

Ba-10 2Wd To Ax15 4Wd
comanche1989 replied to comanche1989's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for the replys. This might sound like an amateur question, but can I put a transfer case on a 2wd transmission? I feel like you can't but I'm unsure -
Will an AX-15 5 speed and transfer case from a 1990 wrangler bolt on to a 1989 Jeep Comanche with the 4.0, and BA10?

Bench Seat 4 Point Safety Harness
comanche1989 replied to comanche1989's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
With my limited metal fabrication experince- I might be purchasing a small flux core welder soon:banana:- and my small budget, I think I might be better buying an aftermarket 3 point or finding a buckle for my existing seat belts. Thank you for the input though, when I have more experience and funds that seems like a very good mounting system! -
Link doesn't work for me cruiser :dunno:

I researched a little more, and mnkyboy is correct, it would be far cheaper to swap in another gm engine. I guess I'm just biased towards the 4.0s  . The Lq1 3.4 pushed out 210 hp at 5200 rpm and 215 lb·ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
-
I'm not sure about the gm but a 4.0 with an Ax-15 5speed and a transfer case with the engine wiring harness would probably be around a grand used.
-
A 4.0 swap most likely can be done on a much smaller budget than a diesel swap simply because of ease of the swap and the large supply of 4.0's out there.
-
I'd simply get it because its a longbed 4x4 with the 5 speed. If the engine is bad I'd say you should just swap in a 4.0. The 2.8s weren't known for their longevity.

Bench Seat 4 Point Safety Harness
comanche1989 replied to comanche1989's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Honestly I probably don't need one, I just saw them online and started thinking about it. My female buckle failed and I can't seem to find an oem piece online. I've found the bucket seat female buckle but I don't think I can uses one of those because they have the plastic sleeve. -
Hello Everyone, my 1989 Comanche's driver seatbelt recently broke. I've been searching for one with no success so I figured I might as well throw in a 4 point if I can. Is it plausible? If so how easy is it to install and which brands are the best? Thanks, Sam

Thanks for the replys all, I ended up making a templet and cutting one out of some material I had laying around. Hopefully the mj will be on the road soon!

I guess I didn't think about rtv. Thank you!

Hello Everyone. I'm in the process of rebuilding the engine from my 1989 Manche with the 4.0. I'm almost complete, all I have to do is reinstall the oil pump and throw the oil pan back on. But I've run into an issue. When I removed the oil pump there was a thin paper gasket where the pump mates to the block. It was torn so I threw it away. I can't find the new gasket for the life of me. Anybody know where I can purchase one, or if its even necessary? I went to all the auto parts store in my town and none have any, even in their computer database. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi everyone, I'm in the middle of replacing my piston rings and connecting rod bearing, and the exterior of my engine is very oily and dirty. I know if you have the crankshaft removed you can wash the whole block with warm water. I am not replacing crank bearings, so I am wondering the best way to wash the block. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm hoping to get this project on the road by christmas, so i have a good amount of work ahead of me!I'll probably retain my original cooling system, mostly because I'm working on a High School budget. I can't wait to get my manche back on the road! :MJ 1:

So to swap in the H.O. with the renix wiring, I would have to modify the tps, get a high output intake tube , the egr would delete, then i would have to get an H.O. downpipe for the o2 sensor. Id swap the alternator, then I would be set, right? Any other big mods needed to get the H.O. running on the renix harness? the injectors would hook up just fine to the harness, correct?
-
i still have my blown renix engine, i just saw this H.O. on craigslist for 150. Got it from an xj with a bent frame. so honestly i don't care about the power, i just want a running engine. so if i swapped the heads and the alternator i could get away with running a high output engine that really isnt high output? :brows: The only thing wrong with my renix is the whole bottom end is dead. The top end is fine.
-
Okay, So i have a 1989 Comanche 4 liter with a 5 speed. My engine blew, so i bought a 1992 high output engine off of craigslist. It came with the whole wiring harness, but the engine came from an automatic transmission, so i don't think the harness will work. ive heard of people who had kept the original renix harness, so I'm wondering what mods i will have to do if I decide to keep my renix wiring. Ive heard that you have to delete the egr valve to do a high output swap, if anyone could give some advice i would be thankful.
