finally got fuel pressure, but still no run.
BlueMoon replied to snacob14's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Howdy again, I found this on another jeep site, it may help us on trouble shooting: I see that no one has offered-up the Distributor's sync sensor as a place to look -- I'll detail a few tips below -- The Sync sensor is used in combination with the CPS to determine just which piston is at TDC (the CPS can only show crank position and #1 and #6 are at TDC at the same time, one on compression and the other at exhaust)... If the data from the DistSync is ambigous or missing, the ECU will try to fire the #1 cylinder, every other time the TDC mark flys past the CPS - if the engine doesn't start, then it'll skip one of the TDC instances and try to fire #1 180* off from where it started before... This could be part of why you're getting good starts & bad starts. The Dist Sync signal does have a tendancy to drop it's ground reference and become unpredictable -- Leme type some thoughts: So the sync connector out of the dist is a round 3-position connector -- Pin A = Black - Ground - (chassis gound, both in the dist and for the harness - you can unplug the connector to check both grounds seperately - it's OK to add a chassis ground to this line) Pin B = Blue - Output - (to pin C16 of the ECU - should show about 5 volts static between Pin-B and Pin-C - connected to harness, key on, engine off) Pin C = Gray - Supply (should be about 7VDC from pin C5 of the ECU) While you're looking at the static voltage between Pin-B and Pin-C, if you crank the engine, you should be able to see the voltage fluctuate as the sensor rotates (qty=1 wiggle per rev, so it's not that impressive) I seem to remember the gray wire on Pin-C having a stripe as well... -- was just looking at a dist yesterday, but can't remember much more -

Sorry, wanted to add my cps resistance reads 232 on cold engine as I am unable to get it running and manual states 200+/-75 ohms on hot engine. -

Howdy all, I'm not holding my breath but, I finally had a reasonably good day and borrowed a fuel pressure gauge for my "only runs on starter fluid" MJ. Actually, due to the results of my first test, I drove back to my napa store and swapped the first for another one. Same results. The meter didn't even budge. Nada Nil Zip...no pressure from my fuel pump. As before when I pressed the valve in the fuel port, gas was present. It just wasn't present with pressure. So, I'm talking with a friend about my Jeep's problems and ordering a new pump and filter and he says he happens to have a fuel pump out of a '96 Cherokee sitting at his home. QUESTION #1: Good folks that you all are here, I pose the question to you. Will this fuel pump work in my rig? Thanks, many thanks to all of you for any and all of your help on this problem of mine. As soon as I able able I will get my ride back "off-road again". Kinda a twist to the old song. And then.... I can start tackling the other issues, but at least she'll run agin.. QUESTION #2: Will some please CONFIRM if spark is confirmed to be present and our "only runs on starter fluid" MJs fuel pumps have no pressure the cps being at fault can be ruled out? -

Thanks Paradise, You say you have added relays as well, but does your MJ have any problems?

Maybe this time? Image Not Found

I took another look at your post with pic of relays and yes it helped greatly,,,THX guess some clarification is needed though, I was not counting the starter relay in with the other ones, I have five relays (cubed in shape) and the starter relay...ok? the fifth (cubed relay) looks to be an add-on as it is clip wired into the wiring harness and from the first relay closest to the windshield. Wish I could figure out how to get my pic from photobucket on here, that would help I am sure, Too tired to go on riht now, been on one of my many insomnia nights Thx agn Paradise and later gator Ron

OK Paradise....normally my mj has five relays?...sorry was under the impression my year mj should only have four. four are all in a row, but the fifth is spliced from the first relay and also has splices into portions of the wiring harness. wondering if this could be the root of all my gremlins with my mj. thx 4 responding Paradise

ok...I have a pic of my relay messon photobucket, But my brain to too thick I reckon to add it here! funny I thought I was fairly intelligent.
-
sorry, that didn't work...gonna look at the help site here
-
Let me see if this works, it's a pic of my FIVE relays and the wire splices

That brings up the question...how does one tell a renix from a 4.0L ? I have an '87 pioneer with auto trans and the "metal emblem" on the tailgate says 4.0L.

Sorry for the late comeback Rav. Too bad we didn't know then huh? I'm headed to Deadland (that's what most call Deland...lol) in the next few days to look at another jeep for a parts car. Always good to get a MJ for free...best of luck on your mj. Mine is down at the moment and can't work on it...I'm old and beatup and havin one of those weeks. c u on th flip side Ron

Question guys... My exhaust manny is badly cracked and found this on craigslist. Would this fit mine and is it worth the price? Thx one and all http://orlando.craigslist.org/pts/2267734705.html

:clapping: Great posts one and all!! I'm too new to jeeps to have any tip or tricks, but have learned tons from all I've read here. Question..Abbreviations are fine when you know what the mean, but for us newbies might I suggest a topic site here, be started on abbrs. Perhaps I have missed an area here that is already available and one of you would be kind enuff to direct it to me. I've been around, well let's just say I might be in the top 5 of the oldest guys here, but I am very impressed with all of you and your willingness to share and aid those of us who need it. Hopefully one day when I am more versed with jeeps and MJs in particular, I will be able to reciprocate. Thanks again amigos...i'm gonna didi on out of here...bfn

Howdy all, Does anyone know the function of the four relays under the hood? My MJ has some interesting mods to them; The relay closest to the windshield had been spliced to another fifth relay? Not at all sure of what the P.O. intention was with this mod. He also has made some splices from and into the wiring harness near that area as well. It has two additional red wires spliced from the wiring harness, one runs back to my fuel pump and the other into the firewall. Not sure where it goes from there yet. I bought this MJ from an estate sale (the owner's son said it had been in storage for about 9 mos). It ran fine, but added new tires, used cored out radiator, changed fliuds and lubed all the chassis points and no probs for the year I've owned it. Until a few weeks ago when it started this "only runs on starter fluid" scenario. Up until that time I thought, if it aint broke..you know? I had the relays checked at napa and the only bad relay was the fifth added one. Oh, btw, I found my cps. was under the truck blindly copping a feel and couldn't find it. I looked down from above, moving wires, etc. and lo and behold...tada...there she was. Will have to wait to check til my bod isn't screaming at me, but wanted to know what the relays were about in the meantime. I would also like to trace these rerouted wires, but I not sure I want to go that route. It also needs a new exhaust manifold as it's cracked up near where the last down tube meets the header assembly. Also have to install new P. steering unit as it leaks badly and a few minor glitches. Oh, before I forget, there seems to be two female ports near the relays (I assume these are for diagnostics?) true? false?

Sorry, somehow never really covers one's heart when they loose a part of their family. I can only say most of us here know only too well what their hearts feel deep to the core. When one's best bud, riding pal, slobbery kisses and those one in a million "looks" they gave us are no more. I offer a distant hug to ya. I too lost too many of my canine pals over the years and said time after time..."no more pups...it hurts toooo much". Then one day, out of the blue, wham...it hits you...you see this new muttnik..and you're hooked. One can NEVER replace a lost love, but one MUST put their hearts back out there and love again. Some people can't grasp, nor will they ever, the emptiness, the tears, the heartache of having to put our pups to sleep...that's their loss, amigo. I put my heart out yet again...I have a new pup...well he aint no pup...he's a LUNATIC....crazy as a loon...so I named him LOONEY....he's an Austrailian Sheperd....My first experience with this breed. My only regret his I'm not young enuff or healthy enuff to give him all he needs. I offer what I can, when I can. He's amazing...you can actually see the "gears" moving around in his head when he looks at you. So, my distant MJ bud.....give time to grieve...jeesh..you never stop grieving...but do what is right by you, but remember this... What would he want for you?.....And also, it's ok to cry...REAL men know...crying is a part of life...I do...and I'm not ashamed at all to admit it! But when you're at your lowest...thinking of your bud...don't you...out of the blue....get this big grin or start laughing remembering all the times you shook you head at the quirks he had..and those NEVER fade...It DOES get better.

Sorry, but I need to jump in here and ask something. Is the cps on the driver's side on the bell housing? And do all '87's have one? I expect on answer to my question in the next 30 secs or else! ...lmsoa Thx, Ron -

I for one can't thank each of you who have contributed all these great schemes and photos. I am not new to wrench turning, but I am to Comanches and all these vacuum lines. Mine ran fine, till a few weeks ago. I started it and it was chugging and fuming...couldn't even get it out the driveway. I shut it off and let it sit as I had to the airport to attend a family member's funeral. Once I returned, about two weeks later I tried it again and it turned over but would not start. I've been taking with some other great folks here and trying there suggestions, but still a no-go. I could really use some pics of things like the cps. It's supposed to be on the driver's side of the bell housing, but for the life of me I cannot find anything there. Also which is best manual for these buggies...? Looks like I'm running out of room on this...so thanks again...Ron -

I have to work on her when my body allows and it doesn't always cooperate. Drop a reply to the florida? post...if you need any help, don't hesitate to call on me. Later Gator, Ron
