Painting Steering Column
acfortier replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
As far as the process, I was going to drop it, take off the steering wheel, and mask everything else around it. I was more curious on the product to use--SEM Color Coat is listed as • Properly prepped and primed metal, so just need to take my time. Thanks! -
Gave it a good scrub with a toothbrush and baking soda/water paste, and all is good! Just have to figure out a good way to seal it back up, since I don't think I have rivets that small. Need to get it inspected soon, but still waiting on the front license plate bracket I ordered.
-
Has anyone painted a steering column? Want to paint mine black to the rest of the interior that I have. What have folks used to try to match the black? I know SEM Color Coat 15013 Landau Black is a good match, but that seems to be only for plastics, will that work on the steering column?

So far, so good! We've had her for two nights, and she's been pretty good for a pup. Buttoned everything back up, but still some weird gremlins to work out. The intermittent selections don't work whatsoever, so I think I may have a busted module. I've also noticed that sometimes, if I go from LO to OFF, they won't return correctly. I'll have to cycle them back on and off again for them to return. May try to hit the junkyard for one before I spend $75 on eBay for a used one.

Well, got it all fixed up. The wiper motor I purchased from the parts store said it was for my '91, but it had a different plug on it with different colored wires. I attempted to splice the old plug onto the new motor, which obviously didn't work. Had a sneaking suspicion that the new motor was no good... So ended up looking up an '88 wiper motor, and it looked like the right one (and had the round plug like I have in the pictures). Picked it up, didn't have the plug in the box as you had to use the existing one, so I cut it off of the other motor and wire nutted it on to test... and viola. Worked without issue. I'm thinking I had a bad wire within in the motor, not really sure though. Anyways, all fixed up! Didn't have time to button it back together as we picked up our German Shepherd puppy!

I just checked that main harness--the wiper/washer actually splits off before that main harness, so I don't think it's that. I started a thread over in Tech... I'm getting the correct voltage at the plug for the wiper motor, just seems to go haywire as soon as it's plugged in.

Wiper + Washer Debugging
acfortier replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No visible melted plugs. Haven't taken apart the steering column to see if there's anything wrong in there, but everything else is good. I haven't tested resistance in the wires, but I'm getting the correct voltage at the harness-side plug for the wiper motor. As soon as I connect the wiper motor, it goes haywire. I have no idea why connecting the wiper motor all of a sudden messes everything up. If I wiggle the plug, it may get better or worse (I actually was able to get them to rotate twice without stopping, usually it's just a split second movement then nothing), but I don't see anything wrong with it. Unless the new motor I purchased and spliced to the old plug is no good, I don't know what else it could be. -
Got an odd issue on my '91 that I can't see to figure out what's the cause of the issue. Originally, the wipers would work intermittently--if you put them on LO, they MAY actually move, but it's not at any speed I would consider LO. The washer pump seemed to also work intermittently. I do have intermittent wipers, but I've bypassed that module all together, so I've ruled that out as being the issue. Once the wiper motor is disconnected, the washer works without issue. As soon as you connect it again, nothing. I added a ground for the wiper motor, and cleaned the dash and driver's side inner fender grounds. Still nothing. Not sure what to try next?
-
Added in a ground near the wiper motor per https://comancheclub.com/topic/57353-comprehensive-wiper-modification-upgrade-maintenance/ Still no change in behavior. Cleaned the ground on the driver's side inner fender, no change. Was going to tackle the dash ground but I'm not seeing a 8mm stud anywhere that I can use. Will keep looking.
-
Not yet. I’ll spice one in at the motor. What’s the best place for the dash ground?
-
Back to the windshield wiper/washer problem... New stalk just arrived, placed it in and...! Nothing. No change in behavior. The washer only works intermittently, and same with the wipers--I can get them to move on Hi, but it's definitely way slower than it should be. Bypassed the box again, and still the same. I can't seem to figure out what's going on. Dash lights will randomly flicker while the wiper is in an on position, as well. I'm assuming at this point that it is the multifunction switch... Going to swing by the parts store and pick one up. EDIT: Thought that it might be a wonky ground, but then I just tested the high beams, and they don’t stay on. That is definitely an issue with the multifunction switch. EDIT2: nope, I was wrong—just me being a fool about the high beams. Did figure out that when the wiper motor is disconnected, washer works fine. When it’s connected, it doesn’t work anymore. Bad ground?

Interesting, because that key doesn't match the style I currently have. It looks like what I linked above, but there seems to be multiple part numbers. Crown has these part numbers: But there's a gap. I found 4378751 that may be the correct part, but can't really seem to confirm. Is there actually a difference between all of these keys?
-
Yeah, I’m seeing some like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GRAND-CHEROKEE-WRANGLER-CHEROKEE-BLANK-IGNITION-DOOR-KEY-MOPAR-4746316-/323999893675?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0 but it says for a 1994-1998. Can’t seem to find one for 1991.
-
Thanks, I think I'll go that route. Any idea on where to get some OEM Jeep keys for this?
-
Found a XJ/YJ electrical manual and confirmed that the above is correct--phew!

While I wait for the new stalk to arrive (didn't realize the it was as simple as yanking out the old one to replace it, thought I had to dig into the column), I did notice that the key doesn't lock in the ignition. I was able to remove it without hitting the lever, as well as remove it while it was in the on position. Does it make sense to just buy a new ignition switch + door lock set? Do they sell them together as a set?
-
Wish they had a picture of it. I’ve already chopped up and spliced the plug onto the new motor, but $35 for a jumper harness? Ouch.
-
Ah, interesting, I guess that makes sense. I hope I mapped the wires correctly between the new motor and old plug.
-
That's my thought exactly. Although, it's entirely possible that I rotated it too far and seized it up? Not sure. New stalk will arrive tomorrow, I'll give that a whirl and see where I stand. If replacing the stalk doesn't work, do the wipers actually have anything to do with the turn signal switch inside the steering column?
-
Yep, did that--no difference. I'm not sure--shouldn't I be able to turn it by hand? The new one turns without issue. Just seemed like it locked up all of a sudden. I'm thinking it's the stalk--I just went to go test this motor, and now the windshield fluid didn't spray out like before.

Ended up snagging a unit from O'Reilly's in town. Nearly identical, only difference is the plug. Old unit has the white and red wires going to the motor, and the blue, black, and grey wires going to the plastic bits. We know that the black is used as a ground. The new unit has brown and red wires going to the motor, and then blue, green, and black wires going to the plastic bits. But the ground for the black wire is on the side of the unit rather than underneath the cover. You can see it at the top of the first picture. I'm guessing (old -> new): red -> red white -> brown blue -> blue grey -> green black -> black

Just seeing those replies now. What's the easiest way to bypass the box underneath? EDIT: Got to the box, it was velcro'd, unplugged it and plugged in the two sides of the harness directly, no difference. I ended up taking out the motor, and it was filled with hardened grease. Started to clean it up, and was rotating the lever on the back to spin the gears until I got to a point where it seized up, and now won't move. Not sure if I engaged some type of stop-lock mechanism, or if it was already on it's way out, but it definitely won't move anymore.
-
Yep, exactly. Turned them on to intermittent, nothing, turned them on the Low, got them to move, then turned them off, stopped in the middle, tried to turn them back on to Low and nothing again. Odd. Going to take apart the wiper motor today and see what's up. I ended up purchasing Dorman 49277 which looks to be the correct stalk, since this one has the cruise control which is cut. If it ends up being the multiswitch, I believe I'll need this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C0OXXO/?coliid=I1B3CIP4J2CBAZ&colid=2XI49MP3ZB2IM&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
