  1. TCU/TCM DYI fix. My ‘88 AW4 would start out in 4th and not downshift. I was able to manually shift gears with the column shifter so I bought a used TCU/TCM and it fixed my problem. Out of curiousity I took my old TCM apart and discovered a single burned up resistor. I ordered a new one and soldered it in and wouldn’t ya know it, success!   2. You were told correctly. That’s what Bilstein states on their website. Most of their shocks are made for specific vehicles and must be mounted a certain way for clearance issues. But the 5125s come in all kinds of sizes for different applications and since they’re mono tube shocks it makes no difference which way they are mounted as to how they operate. In fact the front 5125s came with the stickers oriented for can down mounting as that’s the only way you can mount them as they have an eye on the bottom (can side) and a stud on top. As to what is “best” that’s a whole other internet argument. My trucks never going in the mud so I’m not worried about trapping anything in the boots.
  3. Thank you! Good eye. I did some research when mounting them, they’re mono tube shocks so they can be mounted can up or can down, makes no difference. The front ones mount can down, so I put them on the same way in the rear. 6 of one, half dozen the other. Appreciate all the compliments everyone, this little truck makes me happy every time I drive it.

  5. Same experience a lot of military vets are sharing. Navy boot camp before being deployed to sea service. By kids learning to be dentists. Wide awake. Could hear every snap, crackle and pop. Bled for days. 10/10 would not recommend.

  7. so that’s what I ended up doing. I can always go back if I end up hating it but right now I’m digging the 80’s throwback. Some dental floss, a lot of elbow grease and a little mequires cleaner wax.

  9. I’m on the fence. This is my ‘88. I put ‘86 decals on it a couple years ago and I love them but I can’t make up my mind about adding the 4x4 that came along with them. What do you guys think?
  10. To help with the removal of the entire assembly you can remove the little Mount that protrudes on the front of the cowl cavity. Simply remove the two nuts from the engine side of the firewall that hold it on. Makes it much easier to pull the assembly out. The OP mentions this later upon reinstalling but do it before removing the assembly.

  14. Finished my rollbar. Now it screams 80’s. Really happy with the way it came out.

  20. Making progress slow but sure.
  21. Widened the bar 7 3/8”. It’s getting there.
  22. Keep in mind two things. 1) I’m not making this to save myself in the event of an actual rollover B) I’m not a welder but I own a $99 Harbor Freight welder and a grinder. And some bondo. Some progress. Cut the bar all up and measured and test fit and measured and measured and guessed a little and cut, inserted and welded, ground, and bondo-ed. Still have a lot more work to do.
  23. Gave up on locating a factory SWB roll bar Found a late 80s Toyota rollbar on Craigslist. It’s about 8” too narrow and 1” too short. Ordered up some 3” tube to make up the difference. Then I cut the down tubes and and plan on swapping them left to right so they slant inboard, instead of outboard. I’ll post up more pics as I make progress. Using some frame mounts I bought from a member here.
  24. I discovered that one of my connectors on my ignition switch had severely melted at some point in history. I went to the junk yard to pull another connector and noticed the exact same thing on the same terminal, though not as severe. Anyone have a clue what’s causing this and how I can prevent this from burning my beloved Comanche to the ground?
