Engine Swap: FAILED Should of just got rid of it.
-
Well, I got the used motor put in, decided to see if it worked before putting everything back together. The engine had no oil or coolant. I placed the heater hoses over by the battery, on the third try a big spark happened and one hose moved a bit and the engine started. I ran it for maybe 2 seconds on turned off the ignition. I was very pleased it started. Got it on you tube. After putting everything back together the engine would not start. I pulled a spark plug wire and saw it sparking to the engine. So I guess I've got spark. Unscrewed the fuel line pressure release cap and fuel came out after pressing the valve. So I guess I've got fuel. I'm assuming it's getting air. I put in a new cps. I'm not hearing the usual fuel pump whirl up when I turn on the ignition. I'm guessing that sparking on start up caused some damage. I hoping someone might have some suggestions what else I could check for. Thanks

The engine is out, next, waiting for pick n pull to have a motor to pick. That engine leveler was a good investment. Looks like my clutch is OK. This starting to look like putting a puzzle back together. :hmm:

Well haven't pulled the motor yet, procrastinating or something, I think I'll try pulling it with the header on. I did consider redoing the motor but with the piston in the cylinder crooked and the major coolant leak, I'm guessing no. 5 cylinder is cracked. The transmission works OK, so I'll probably live with it, I'll take a closer look at it with the engine out.

Getting things set up, haven't got an engine yet. Some tools of the trade to get at those E-12 bolts. Dropped the transmission a bit to get at the two E-12's tucked away. Next is unbolting the transmission, not sure how this is going to work out. I'm hoping I can undo the bolts and slide the engine forward while the transmissions stay fixed on the cross member and jack. I've got about 5 ins till the front of the engine hits the jeep front frame.
-
Thanks for the tips, that's going to help. Got the leveler, transmission adapter for the jack and bought some chain. Went down to pick n pull today, spied 1990 Cherokee with 222,000 kms. The front right side was smashed up so I'm thinking the engine was working right up to impact. The weather taking a turn for snow or rain. Hopefully the beast will around the yard for another week. Starting to think this might a two man job getting the engine out of Pick n Pull and getting it home, as big as my Crown Vic trunk is, don't think it'll fit in the trunk. Have to remember to take pictures. More to follow, over!

Thanks Comanche Addict, Bought an engine crane from Princess Auto, so it's time to let the fun begin.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, turns out the garage option is pricey. If the Comanche survives I'm going to have do it myself. Thanks MJ Junkie for the Princess Auto link, might just head down there and get one. Hope I can fit it in the Crown vic.

I'm thinking tearing down and removing as much stuff I can and have a garage put a rebuilt motor in and I'll put all the pieces back on. Not sure if they'll like that idea, doesn't hurt to ask. Jan 2015 Semi Gloss Black.

My Comanche died. Engine failure. 21 Mar 2015 about 530,000 kms And had a crack a tooya also. Debating if I should junk'er or fix my Comanche. Had it for 25 years so I'm a bit attached to it. I leaning towards fixing it. Put some Rizone the day before she blew, must cleaned all carbon that was holding her together.

Nope, but I think I've had the connector apart years ago. Looks like that's my next task which will happen when the snow disappears and it warms up a bit.
-
Here's the latest: Changed the fuel pump ( only good thing about that job is should be easier 2nd time around) and the truck wouldn't start. Next day truck started as if nothing was wrong. Took out the ECM, (that wasn't easy either) checked and put some di electric stuff on the connector. Replaced the relay for the fuel pump. Played around with ballast resistor. Waiting to see if the truck dies a third time. Hopefully it won't be -20 if it does. Oh, sidenote: when replacing the fuel pump the fuel screen on the pump fell off into the tank, so I'll see what that does to the fuel pump life.
-
Well, truck stalled again yesterday. So I guess it's not the ground wire behind the taillight. Next option is the fuel pump, not what I want to change, but I guess after 528 k's it's due.
-
Removed taillight and tried to remove ground screw with Philips screwdriver. No go. Had to use vice grips to turn the screw. After disconnect, tried the ignition, no fuel pump noise. Wow. Once again so much depends on just a little thing. Cleaned the screw, ground wire connector, and screw hole and put some grease ground stuff on it. I'm hoping that's the cure, time will tell. Thanks guys for the input. Here's a snap of my new deck and the paint job on the dash.
-
Well, I'll try the ground by the taillight first. I'm wondering if the CPS goes if that would affect the fuel pump not whiring up when the ignition is turned on.
-
On two occasions (couple of months apart) my engine (4.0L 88 Comanche) stalled and would not start. Both times I could not hear the "whiz clunk" when turning on the ignition. Both times after a few hours later the engine starts as per usual. On each occasion it was fairly hot day. I'm guessing a number of possibilities, faultly fuel pump, poor ground on fuel pump, cps or poor cps ground. Just wondering if anyone has had an identical problem, be nice just to cut to the chase. Thanks.

This is a long shot, it might work. If there is a electronic recycle depot in your area, check and see if they sell old working computers. (cheap) (the depot in my area does and they install XP on them) and use that for your older software. If you can get the computer without and OS download on your new computer for free Linux Mint "Lisa xfce 32 bit" and burn it to a disc. Load it on the old computer, it should set everything up including internet if you have the hardware. There's a pile software you can then install one of which is WINE. WINE can sometimes run older MS software. I've run a windows program called Irfranview on it and it worked fairly well. Hopefully it can run your older MS software. Just some food for thought.

Post subject: Re: what has your comanche gotten you? My comanche gotten me around for about 466,000 km's over a 22 years. Today while driving my Comanche to work, it got me wondering when my fuel pump or CPS will pack it in, I'm hoping they last forever. My Comanche got a ticking lifter and its gotten me wondering about getting the engine fixed or replaced. That ticking doesn't represent Jeep's well. One thing my Comanche has gotten me, that most other vehicles can't brag about, took out a lightpost along the highway (due to slick road conditions back in 93) and was able to drive away after changing a flat tire. I still can't figure how that Jeep climbed over that concrete base (approx 20" high) with both wheels and not get a scratch on the Jeep. Apart from preparing to die just before impact, it was kind of cool watching the light pole disappear over the cab. What's my Comanche gotten me 99% of the time, HOME!

Did a bit of painting on the dash, used spray bombs. Going for the candy apple effect. Not sure I like the colour, might try a different colour.

Today's tip, when you remove and replace thingee's from the throttle area- made sure you put it back exactly as it was. The lever on the thingee was put back wrong, which caused this- The good thing about a ruptured muffler was I got to hear what throaty Comanche sounds like. And now it's back to normal. Your ecu should have detected a very lean condition and then adjusted the impulse width of your injectors accordingly. I've ran my truck with the tps disconnected and never had an issue. Too bad this happened to you, but I'm not quite sure if you found the correct cause for your results. _________________ 89_4.0_5-speed ax-15_NP231_3.54 gears_D44 w/ lock-rite_SOA_4+1 MT springs_4" front lift w/no-slip_Posi-loc_Custom front/rear Bumpers Top Profile E-mail 2360 Post subject: Re: Today's Tip New postPosted: Mon Aug 20, 2012 10:49 am Offline Comanche fan User avatar Joined: Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:43 am Posts: 91 Location: Calgary Alberta Canada I'm not sure of the finer details either. But since put back properly, there's no more backfiring or high idling.
