Read your post which makes perfectly good sense on the fluid being low..don’t know why I didn’t think of that, duh!!! Of course the dipstick says check hot idling in park. Fired it off and let it run for about 10 minutes and then checked level which is showing good but actually on the high side, really doesn’t make sense with the loose dipstick tube and the oil I’m seeing on the bottom of it. Granted it’s not like the underside is completely coated in oil but there was some coming from there. Same thing, not going into gear. I knew I was not going to get out that easy. Any other suggestions welcomed.

I got an 88 auto and assuming it’s the AW4. No previous issues with tranny, no slipping or hesitation at all. Actually towed a trailer loaded down up to the hunting lease this past weekend. Was driving it in from work this morning running about 60 on the bypass when it felt like it just came out of gear almost like I threw it in neutral. To make a long story short had it towed to the house. Did an overall visual inspection and the only thing I could find was an issue with the tranny dipstick tube, it’s a 2 piece and had come apart and tranny oil was blowing out, the oil had saturated an electrical connector on the side of the tranny, connector is located directly below the dipstick tube. I’m assuming the connector is part of the shift control? I’m not saying that’s the issue but it just caught my attention and just wondering if it could have shorted out with the “oil bath”?? Anyway I guess I need to get out my FSM and start digging into it. I was was hoping someone could point me to a good “troubleshooting thread”, I’ve had better luck on the forum than the actual FSM. Headed to to bed now after working all night, will check my post later on to see if I get anything back on it. Btw, the tranny oil looked good and was definitely not burnt, it’s also going into park. Thanks in advance, Griff04

Replaced my b-pillar lights today with some plug n play Euramtec...found them on EBay but there is also a link here on the forum about them. Pretty straightforward install. I’ll see how bright they shine after dark...but anything would be better than “the nothing” that I had.

We got a late afternoon rain and it cooled off somewhat so I went ahead and swapped out the ECU, took 30 minutes, PIA with location. With everything I’ve done with plug wires, plugs, cap/rotor, TB cleaning, and the injectors it’s really hard to tell if the ECU swap made a difference or not. It’s definitely idling and running 100% better. I’ll just say if nothing else it’s been swapped. Griff04

Ordered parts last week for a headlight upgrade and swapping out the ECU with a 428. Ran into a couple of issues when the headlight upgrade. 1. New headlights would not fit due to having tabs on the backside of them which wouldn’t allow them to seat properly into the headlight adjustment plate assembly. Used my old headlights, looks like the PO May have upgraded them to some type of halogens but not 100% sure. 2. Pulled the upgraded wiring harness out of the box and the wire that connects to the inline fuse jus fell out. Tried pulling the clip out so I could reattach it but couldn’t get it out. I had a spare one left over from another project so I just used it. Once I got everything buttoned back up and turned on the lights the brightness was like night and day, could even tell a difference in the daylight. Will try them out after dark. The ECU swapout will have to wait until tomorrow, done got way too hot out here...I need an air conditioned shop!!!

Picked up the Mopar part, worked like a champ. I got a Crown part if anyone needs it. Lol Griff04

Ordered the Mopar part today from my local Jeep dealership, should have it tomorrow. A little pricey at $42 but at least I’ll have some peace of mind about not worrying about the fuel line coming loose. Hopefully this will resolve the issue. Will update the post after installation. Thx, Griff

Your description is exactly the way I had it set up but still will not go in 100% enough to “snap into place”. I’ll try it again tomorrow, sometimes if you just walk away from a problem and go back to it things work out, well at least it has worked for a few times like that in the past.

So I got the new crown part today and tried installing, for some reason I can’t get it to seal off. It just isn’t snapping in like I think it should. Honestly I’m not 100% sure of the o-ring orientation. I tried putting all 3, actually 1 of them looks like a spacer, in front of the crimped ring on the tubing and then tried 1 behind the crimp and 1 oring and spacer in front of the crimp. I’m attaching pics of what was sent, not sure what the plug is inside the plastic coupling is for, my tubing will definitely not fit into it. Can an someone tell me if I have the orings in the correct place or what I could possibly be doing wrong?

Completed the Bosch 746 injector swapout today. Idles better and appears to have a little more pep but the verdict is still out on the performance aspect. Other than some missing parts on the fuel rail that the PO failed to mentioned I’m satisfied.

Thanks Dan.

So that p/n comes back as a repair kit??

So I got the 746s installed today, idles better and appears to have a little bit more get up and go, the verdict is still out. During the install I noticed a couple of things, first off the fuel rail had been off before, one of the brackets that holds it in place was missing a bolt along with one new injector. Evidently the PO had installed the new one. One MAJOR thing I ran across was there didn’t appear to be any type of clip holding the gas line onto the fuel rail towards the front of the engine. Once I removed the one hole bracket that holds it in place along with the vacuum block, not sure of the correct name for that, it basically just pulled out. Now I’m thinking this can’t be right, what’s to hold it it place and not vibrate out. The small one hole strap does not securely hold it as the gas line can actually move in it. So, what am I missing? I did find some generic fuel line clips for fuel rails at autozone but it is not sealing off. Right now the line is just pushed up into the housing but it’s not leaking. If it does need a clip does anyone have a part number for it?? Here are a couple of pics: I

Started the major tune-up this morning. Was surprised to see NGK plugs in it and surprised at the shape they were. All of them burned white but 1, same one that plug wire basically fell out of the plug boot when I grabbed hold of it. There was definitely a difference in idle and acceleration when I got done. Replaced everything with the following: Napa wires, distributor cap, and button. NGK plugs. Ordered a set of Bosch 746 injectors which should be here Friday. Will get them installed over the weekend, I’m hoping to see some more improvement afterwards. Griff04

I’ll be quit 1 year in September. In mid-2017 I noticed a lump/growth came up in the area of my neck and throat. Wound up doing a biopsy on it and having it removed, results came back negative, turned out to be some type of fatty tissue but it scared the hell out me. Put them down the day of the surgery and haven’t wanted one since. Hang in there man, you can do it.

So I went back at it again this morning bleeding the brakes manually. Went through the entire procedure including bleeding the bypass system. Never did get the dash light when doing this so not 100% sure that it actually went to bypass mode with the front bleed fitting open and bleeding the rears per the FSM. Maybe the switch is not working on the bypass unit sending a signal to the light??? The brakes do feel better but I don’t think they are 100%, still have to give them 1 small pump before the pedal really feels tight. Maybe I’m just used to the full disc brakes on my GMC 2500. I’ll do the weekend trip to the hunting camp and see how it goes. There may be some “more meat left on this bone” before it’s completely resolved. Appreciate eveyone’s input. Griff04

Major tune-up is next on the list, wires-rotor-cap and will probably do injectors. Thanks, Griff04

Which NGKs are you running??

I’d rather you throw a 6’ rattlesnake on me vs that spider. The spider may not hurt me but it would definitely make me hurt myself trying to get the heck away from it. Yikes!!!!!!!!

Well I got the shoes installed correctly along with the new drums on this morning. Man, the new drums were tight going on. Had the adjusters out about 3 turns each and had to bump the drums on, they were dragging so badly after getting everything together I wound up with only 1 turn on the adjusters. They still feel a little spongy so I’ll go through a little more adjusting and the bleeding process in the morning. Right now I’m going to bed, it was a long nite at work. Griff04

I personally havent tried it but the guys in the rebuild shop use it all the time. They start complaining everytime a new vendor comes in the plant peddling new products, they are diehard CRC fans...they tell me all the time, whatever you do don’t take our CRC products away. Lol

Building a 1997 MJ in only 89 days!

Did you use single stage or 2 stage with clear coat? -
I got done with the RMS replacement and throttle body cleanup and cicled back to the brakes. Good eye man, you were here absolutely correct, I have both shorts on the passenger side. What a dumba&$ I am, didn’t even pick up on the different sizes when I replaced them. If I worked for me I’d fire myself. Anyway, had planned on replacing the drums due to the wear on them so I’ll do both at the same time. Once I get the pads on correctly and new drums on I’ll go back through the bypass circuit bleed again and see how the brakes do then. Griff04

Got the throttle body off today...had quite a bit of build-up all through out it. Got it cleaned up, 3 cans CRC throttle body cleaner, and then reinstalled. Actually idles a lot better now, we will see if the high idle rears it’s ugly head again. For what’s its worth, no I’m not affiliated with them but I’ve using the CRC products for several years now, they work great, the degreaser product is probably the best I’ve ever used. I work in an industrial maintence environment and have seen a lot of different cleaning products come and go, this has been a go-to for our industrial cleaning needs. Just thought I’d throw that out there....., Griff04
