  1. MAT or water temp? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  2. Will do and get back to ya, thanks! 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  3. 2 parter: this question stemmed from me trying to diagnose my idle. What effect does a cat have on engine performance? PO told me it would pass smog, it didn’t. I cut the cat off and it was empty. I put on a new cat, felt less power, passed smog and put the old empty cat back on. Curious as to what’s going on. 2nd part: It’s had a low hunting idle since I bought it, bounces between 4 and 7 hundred, smells rich and feels slightly underpowered when accelerating. Have not done: smoke test. Have done: Tightened manifold and valve cover bolts Tightened manifold to down tube bolts New plugs/wires New cap/rotor New tps(adjusted properly) New egr Cleaned throttle body Cleaned iac( wasn’t much build up/don’t know if operational, idk what effect it would have if not working) New vacuum lines I tested the o2 sensor with my multimeter and was it okay from my understanding...I believe per cruiser54 you need an analog voltmeter to test properly? PO installed Ford Mustang 4 port injectors, unsure of new or not. Had a temporary issue of power loss on number 4 cylinder. On my way to my pop’s to pull the fuel rail, I filled up and dumped some injector cleaner in the tank, power came back after about a mile and haven’t had an issue since, other than the idle and acceleration that’s been there the whole time. Thoughts? Suggestions? Also, exhaust set up: manifold-pre cat O2- cat-straight pipe turn down. That’s what I got it with, an open cat and no muffler, now I can weld and build an exhaust system if someone could inform me what components are/are not necessary and what effect having/not having them would have. I would like it to be a bit quieter, but I don’t want to lose anymore power. Solving the idle and underpowered acceleration are my primary concern. 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  4. The whistle tip goes whooo whooooooooooooooooo 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  5. Yea one big thing I’ve heard about the MJs, a huge upgrade so I’m told, is the wife delete procedure..I think it’s on cruisers page somewhere. Once you do that tip, everything else comes easy! Lololol the way I explained it was the labor of love, sometimes she’s a huge pain in the @$$ but we endure because we love it, for the good times. Am I talking about women or the jeep? That’s the point.... 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  6. Can anyone suggest a decent way to polish up the front blinkers? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  7. Great info, thanks all! 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  8. Okay also, is there a reason there is a nut in between the shift lever arm and the rod end but not between the tcase arm and opposite rod end? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  9. I have an 87 Wagoneer with the double stack front clip. Anyone have suggestions for alternate brighter lights? They’re slightly small than standard xj lights. This is the direction the PO was going and it’s just not pretty and I’m pretty sure not legal 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  10. Also, what position is your tcase in there? When mine is in 2wd the arm on the tcase faces downward with the standard linkage 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  11. Got it. What do you mean “physical gate from 4hi-neutral”? And did you use 1/4” or 3/16” for your replacement tcase arm? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  12. My brain is having trouble understanding how that would work, how does it not bind up? How did you get the proper indexing? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  13. I collect memories [emoji23] lolololol i has to 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  14. Any particular reason for not replacing the z linkage? Alternates? Or just no...lol 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  15. Thanks for all the great info, I’ve got a much better understanding than I had at the start of last night. 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  16. Are you saying the 97+ interior would work as well? And what other bits and pieces might ya be talking about? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  17. One more thing, now that y’all have helped me identify what axles I’m working with. And I believe they will suffice for what i need, not going bigger than 35s and not dropping in a v8, just weekend warrior stuff and the occasional trip. How would I upgrade them to be a bit more sturdy and give maximum torque/traction? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  18. Think of it this way, if your hazards are on, you’re probably already stopped or if you’re driving with them on, you’re still able to indicate that you are stopping. 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  19. What does non cad mean? And what’s the benefit of high pinion over low pinion? Clearance? Driveline geometry? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  20. From in the cab, the shifter only locks into 2wd, 4wd and lo lock (with some finagling of the handle). It goes from 2wd to 4wd nicely but is loose through hi lock. To get it into lo lock, I have to reset to 2wd (neutral, will explain shortly) and sweep down to lo lock and it will kick in. Going from 2wd to 4wd works but when I pull it out of 4wd it goes into either N or in between settings. To get it all the way back into 2wd I have to get underneath with a wrench and do it manually. The shoddy linkage and indicator lights make it difficult to determine what mode it’s in and I haven’t had a help to be above while I’m underneath to diagnose... Meaning I’m only sure of being in 2wd or lo lock and can’t tell if I’m hi lock or 4wd... For context, I’m trying to get maximum traction on uphill dirt roads without going into lo gears. 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  21. Great info, thanks. What exactly does limited slip diff mean and how would I determine if I have it and if it’s functional? Also, does that mean that locking diffs and locking hubs do effectively the same thing? What’s the comparison in terms of effectiveness? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  22. So the 4wd spot on my indicator is essentially “all wheel drive?” And I should be using hi lock and lo lock for actual off-roading? When would 4wd, open diff come in handy? Also, I’m rarely on icy roads, but in that case what mode would be best? 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  23. Also, you seem to know a bit about swap compatibility. Do you know what year range I can use for interior replacement for my 87 xj Wagoneer. —-only mention the Wagoneer because I’m not sure if that trim package has any different fitment from the others. 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  24. How much do you want for the double stack clip and light set up? Spares for my Wagoneer :) 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
  25. I think you’re dead on on the over sized spring, I imagine they were part of the rough country lift the PO had put on. Now for the shifter/tcase issue. When I use the lever from in the cab I can get into what feels like 4wheel full time and 4wheel lo (part time? I believe) the space in between is slack on the lever side. But when I go underneath and manually shift the tcase with a wrench, I can feel it lock nicely into more positions than are on the shifter display [maybe PO changed center console?] The pictures I’ve seen for the Wagoneer shifter show 2, 4full, 4part, 4part lo. Mine only shows 2, 4hi lock, 4 lo lock as show in the pic above. I have 2 indicator lights that turn on 4wd and lock. What do they mean, they turn on sporadically when I have the tcase any mode other than 2wd. The wires for the connector are a bit frayed, I suspect this is cause for the sporadic issue, but in what modes are they supposed to come on? I’m going to invest in a Novak cable shifter in the hopes of being able to diagnose whether my tcase is working properly. 87' XJ Wagoneer I-6 AW4 NP242
