Ok, I'm to look that up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I bought the 86 last night. Its no where close to drivable, it's missing parts too. The title is "less than clean". Here are the parts I need for the 89: Front driveshaft Rear Bumper Brake booster Emergency brake assembly Windshield Window regulators / window wings Shift console / inner shift boot Miscellaneous dash / interior parts Window washer assembly Transfer case linkage Instrument panel switches Fender flares Back window catch Tail lights Sounds like you got 5 MJ specific parts:Fender flares (Rear only) Back window catch Tail lights Rear Bumper Emergency brake assembly. The rest of the stuff can come off any 96 and below Cherokee. I have found all the Comanche specific items you need in junk yards. Yes, it did take time. Also, you may want to look very closely at the 86 window regulators and wing windows. May not be much better than what you have. But, right now you have two trucks that need work, so do what you need to do to get 1 running properly. Keep up the progress posts! That what I started thinking today. I will take some stuff off the 86 to get me going but I'm not going to gut it. The 89 runs and runs strong. I am in a time crunch so I will get what I need to get it into shape. When time and money allows I will put the 86 together. The window regulators in the 89 are in bad shape, the 86 are good. The 89 has very little surface rust, while the 86 is rusty in the usual places. I kept looking for a parts Cherokee but it's crazy what people out here want for them. Anything at the junkyard gets bare quick. With so much blm land 4 wheeling is a big deal. Plus living in the foothills of the Sierras almost everyone has some kind of 4 wheel drive, and you can't swing a cat without hitting a lifted rig. Thanks for all the input, I'm going to be careful to not "ruin" the 86. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What to do. I bought a great 89 Comanche, but it is missing a lot of parts. I found an 86 Comanche that a guy quit on, that is in good shape other than he didn't finish the 4 cyl install. Seems almost wrong to strip the 86 down to fix the 89. First the 89 Now the 86 What do you all think?

It might be worth your while to check a pick and pull junk yard to find a used set of brake cables. I am kind of partial to the Haynes manuals. Jeep Cherokee: 1984 thru 2001 - Cherokee - Wagoneer - Comanche ISBN: 1563925400 is the one I have.
-
It does have that "been passed around" look to it. I just picked up a 86 manual 4x4 4cly long bed for a parts truck to fill in the missing parts. The parts the 86 is missing are parts I don't need for the 89, yet.

I was wondering how this was working for you? My AC does not work so I would really like it gone.
-
I do believe you are right. If I move the spring perches in, they will be too close to the shock mounts. Can anyone tell me the measurements of where everything goes on the axle? I found how to get the proper pinion angle online.

I am new to this so there is a lot I don't know but here is what I know or have been told so far: It is an 1989 Pioneer that started life as a 2wd. It appears the running gear is out of a cherokee, but I don't know the year. It has the 4.0 in it with a 5 speed. The diff covers have BTF on them and I was told they are Aussie lockers. I was told the front axle is trussed 30 with 4.88 gearing and the rear axle is 8.25 with 4.88 gearing. Those are Goodyear MTR Kevlar 35x12.5x15 on it with a lot of tread left. Here is a picture of the front end:

I was wondering when someone would ask that. The light bar does not match up with the bracket well, and at highway speeds it was louder than a jet. I got the idea to tape the pool noodle to it to maybe keep down the noise. It worked.

Here is the short list of what needs to be done: Rear Axle spring perch Rear Axle shock mount Transfer case linkage Front driveshaft Transfer case spacer (maybe) Speedo Cable Emergency brake cable Fix leak around gas tank sending unit Tailgate won't open AC doesn't work, probably will delete Dash gauges don't work Headliner Windows rattle but barely roll Light bar not mounted right That's just the stuff I see now.

Almost a year ago I started looking for a Comanche. I joined this forum to get some pointers and scanned Craigslist and other ads across the west. What I was finding was rusted hulks that would take the a crane to get them out of the grave. A month ago I found it just 750 miles away in Phoenix AZ. A buddy of mine there checked it out and confirmed it was "road worthy" (a loose term when you are going to put a temp tag on it) I got time off from work and flew down with my wife and daughter to pick it up last week. We have friends and relatives there so we visited and went to a couple of KC Royals spring training games. (We are KC transplants) After rewiring the taillights and getting the tach to work we headed out, using a phone ap for a speedometer. The truck ran so well we decided to do some side trips on the way back. 600 miles of side trips.

Last week we flew down to Phoenix Az to pick up the 89 Pioneer. Thanks for all the help on what to lookout for. All in all it's a great truck, with a little surface rust and that Arizona sun fade paint. It drove like a champ over 1300 miles to get it home. Now I have a lot of projects. Here is a picture of the rear axle. It is out of a Cherokee so the spring mounts are wrong. Notice how the leafs are splayed out and the shackles twisted. I don't know how he got them in, but I will have to fix it. I can keep it over slung, right? Also, the shock mounts are wrong. I was wondering about that. Whether I should weld a frame mount in front of the axle or change the mount on the axle. Any tips for me on this? So far so good. I had fair warning that I would get hooked, so you can say I told you so.

Not specific enough. What lockers? What LED headlights? Is the light bar straight or curved? 1989 is a transition year, do you have an AX-15 or a Peugeot 5spd? What colour is your interior? Do you like gladiator movies? Okay, kinda just bustin' your balls there. Your sig is better than most. That is kinda harsh, I don't usually talk to anyone about gladiator movies, it starts too many fights. But here goes, Demetrius and the Gladiators with Victor Mature and Susan Hayward 1954. -

How's this? -
I work for a company that does fire restoration. I've been on a few (Over 1000) fires. Passenger seat is my guess. See the patterns on the passenger door. Windshield is more melted on passenger side. Drivers door glass lightly affected. Just a guess.

Congratulations on the truck. Junction City is quite a piece from St Louis. Good MJ's are hard to find.

Thanks to everyone for your help. As you can see by my profile pic we bought an 89 6 cyl shortbed 4x4 Comanche! It's only 11 hours away in Phoenix. I found it on Craigslist. One of my friends in Phoenix scoped it out for me, it's sitting in his driveway. We are going to head down catch some spring training ball and pick it up. I have been a member here since last April looking for the right truck.

I'm already a half a dozen projects past my wife's limit. But, if I don't find something before next winter I might go that route. There are some very nice 2wd's in California and plenty of lifted salvage trucks around me. Why do I feel like a lonely teenage bronkin buck with a pink carnation and no pickup truck.

Still looking to buy a 4x4 Comanche. Searching Craigslist, Ebay, and random google searches. I'm seeing a lot of RWD's, some rock crawlers, and more than enough on their last leg salvage title 10 hours away trucks. I saw a 4 cylinder 4x4 with a little body damage 4 hours away. I would really like a 6 cyl, shortbed 4x4, the only thing on that list that is not negotiable is 4x4. First question. What is your opinion on an 86 4x4 4 cyl with 153109 miles? I want a vehicle I can take on jeep trails, travel to trailheads for backpacking, making trips to home depot. Would this have the guts to do this?

That one was a no go. Another one came up and was gone before I could get to it. I am still on the lookout.
