D44 set, lift & tire; questions :)
case5412 replied to case5412's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Anyone got a rear end for sale that fits good under the Comanche; has to be the same width as the 1978 Wagoner D44 front end? I just matched up the two axles I had and then I realized that the pumpkin on the rear isn't in the middle of the axle and I don't believe it'll fit. If anyone has any guidance on this please let me know. I could scratch these axles and buy a 70s Ford Bronco, what axles are under it? I'm near OKC and I'll buy the whole truck if it's the ford F250 1978/79 D44 front and D60 rear, that was my original dream, but I've had a lot of problems finding it. -

Say I kept the D44 axle I have now and bought the truss system from TNT Customs. How hard is it to adjust for the transfer case on this particular axle? :smart: :dunno: -
D44 set, lift & tire; questions :)

I pulled the D44a off the 78 Wagoner this week end, so it's at the shop now. I looked for a Ford 3/4 ton front D44 for a while and never got one. So I went ahead and got the Wagoner not knowing what complications I would be getting into. :help: :help: Thanks for the information and explaining things. Please post all you can. Also, has anyone seen a MJ build where they welding leaf spring brackets to the front? That may be the way the guy at the shop is leaning to; I'm stopping by there this afternoon with the rear D44, I hope to discuss the transformation for the Front D44 and come to a final conclusion. But I want to use the Axle I have now because I already have it, lol. :redX: :redX: Thanks a bunch, Casey -

It's been a while since I posted but I'm back and my trucks coming along nicely. Axles:??? :???: ??? I just pulled the axles out of a 78 Jeep Wagoner and I'm curious on the capabilities I'm getting and the difficulties when installing them into my comanche. I saw a leaf spring to the front conversion, I'll have to do that I guess. Lift & Tires:??? :???: ??? I want to get 33" tires under my Comanche, but I'm not 100% set on it. I was wondering what kind of lift would I able to use to fit these tires with zero rubbing. PS: That damn D44 front in on that old jeep was heavy.

Removed then installed gas tank, now won't start

I'm well aware that I'll need a "real" 4x4 shop. But my problem is locating one. -

I've considered exactly what the forums say is easy. Donor axles from a 78/79 3/4 ton f250. I haven't purchased them yet because I want to find a shop first. I believe this axle donor choice shouldn't be to complicated. But I am a juvenile mechanically minded individual. -

:D It starts now. I guess It was the ground wire. All i did was hook up the tail lights and it works now. About the front axle swap. I need a shop because I live in an apartment. I am getting donor axles from a 3/4 ton truck and my truck is not 4x4. I also need the shop to add in the 4x4 parts. So, let me ask again. Anyone know refrence material or something I can do, while I search for a shop to meet my comanches needs. :smart: -
I moved my gas tank out of the way while I painted my frame and when I put it back in its original location the truck wouldn't start. Does anyone know any shops near OKC or Dallas that will take my comanche in for a front axel swap? The place here gave me a hard time telling me that they need a jig of some sort and that they couldn't do it. But I want to know for sure from the forum guys first.

Do Long beds and Short Beds have the same Frame?
case5412 replied to case5412's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've got my truck bed off the frame right now. I'm just wondering how different they are. I can take a picture of mine and post it and someone with a long bed can tell me the difference? I've very OCD when it comes to getting exactly what I want and I searched forever for the newest Comanche they make and the best for off road. I own a 92 Short Bed Base Truck, with hardly any cosmetic damage and it's in great shape. I really just want to shred any regret that I have not getting the long bed. I think the only benifit is that you can hold more stuff in it? Oh, well. Yall tell me what you think and I'll get a picture up shortly. Thanks, 8) -

So you're saying that the only difference between the two trucks is different wheel placement and a different bed; everything else is the same? -
What does "Command-Trac" stand for?

So which is better? -
Here's a picture of one on the tailgate of a long bed Comanche.

92 MJ, 13 months to make magic

Well, I've been holding back. Did some work and haven't posted it. But I have been running slowly recently. You get caught up in things and soon you're in too deep. I got the Bed Liner done. Used Hurculiner. I scuff sanded it and to top it off allpied a deglosser to enhance sticking. Then... I began striping the bottom of the bed. This process is the most time consuming so far. I've been putting a couple hours in every weekend; and this is where it's got me. 1/2 done though. I'm happy about that. My plans for the bed bottom. These cans of good stuff are what I'll bee using. The POR 15 Rust is for the higher prone to rusting areas and also for any rust spots I may find. The Rust-Oleum is for everything else, basically a primer for the top coat. Then I was going to try the "FlexCot" from POR 15 to see how that works. If I don't like it I'm thinking of just grabbing some cans of underbody paint from wal-mart? Good idea I hope...??? -
Took a little bit of measuring to fit the 15" wheels over the breaks. What do yall think?

I've got these cans of clear coat I'm going to try out. Do you think I should go get it professionally clear coated also? I have some of those cap thingys. Thank you for the advice and help. ;) -

Here's some progress... 8) 8) 8) I began to think about painting and researching on "how to". I ended up with an idea of spray painting it. Cheap and easy to fix when scratched. This is me testing it out on the fender I got from the junk yard. First I removed the stickers with windex and a razor blade then I scuffed the surface up with sand paper so the paint would stick. This is the paint I'm using. I'm hoping the color will never change shades. I was very happy with the results and it seems kind of durable... So... I bought a bunch more paint!!! And then... I did the tail gate. I found out how easy it was to remove from the bed. It suprised me. So... I started getting movtivated. I wanted to take my bed off and paint the whole thing. But, sniff... it started snowing. lol, but I got my ski pants out and starting working in it. I stayed up to 4am that night and BAM... this happened. My friend and my wife helped me carry it into the house. (my wifes back for a few days before she goes over seas) Here it is in the dinning room Then I unbolted the plastic black things on the wheel wells and cleaned them up nice, along with the mud flaps. I ran into a problem. The support strips holding bolts that attatch in the plastic wheel wells had rusted bolts and half of them broke, unavoidably. I'll be searching for a solution.. I was thinking about buying similar bolts at Lowes and getting a friend to spot weld them on? Uh oh... Looks like somebody worked too hard. After removing the stickers from the sides and cleaning it a little I made a game plan. First I'll clean and degrease the bottom, apply a rust preventing primer and a rubberizing undercoating, once I'm finished with the bottom I'll work on the sides and paint them white and clear coating it. Then I'll make my way to inside the bed where I'll install a do it yourself bed liner that my wife bought me for Christmas. It looks like it'll be a long process... Sorry my pics are all jumbled up in a disaray. I'll work on my photos and organization when I have time later. Plus I keep getting those really wide pics that make it hard to read. Thank you for reading so far. Please leave plenty of advice and feedback, so I can learn. -
drop the gas tank, disconnect the e-brake bracket from the bottom of the bed. if you have a roll bar you will have to unbolt the lower bolts as well. When "dropping the gas tank", what's the best way to go about it? Mine has some fuel in it and I was hoping to support it somehow so I wouldn't have to remove the lines and empty the tank. Is this possible? I'm doing this late at night in the snow, cause I'm crazy mad, lol. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: well here goes, I'm in an inpatient mood. I've been careful as hell while working on my MJ, it's about time I do something without proper research. I'll be attemping to unbolt the gas tank and see what happens. Hopfully I can support it with something, cause I have no idea about how or if I'm suppose to remove the lines.

case5412 replied to case5412's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Oh, should I buy it? What transmission is in it? I bet he just looked under it and saw a number and gave it to me. -
