I'm looking for the bracket that holds the 4WD cables on the transmission. It's the last thing I need for my 2WD to 4WD conversion. My MJ is a 92 "Base" the transmission I used was an AX15 and the little bracket I got out of an 80s MJ didn't work. I think because it may not be the same year, but I am asking the Tech forums before I attempt to locate one on the internet and order it. It's the last thing I need so I'll be searching tonight. :D :D    :brows: :brows: :brows: :brows:

92 MJ, 13 months to make magic
case5412 replied to case5412's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
You do know that gears require a very special process to install right? Its not an un-bolt and re-install thing. We are talking adjustments in the thousands of inches. You did change the pinion too, no? Rob L. I feel stupid now. :( -
31"s fit under no lift with no rub?

I just looked up a chart. ______________________________________________________________________________ METRIC TIRE SIZE CONVERSION CHART 15 inch tires sizes Width Aspect Wheel Diameter Section Width 205/70 15 = 26.3 8.1 245/70 15 = 28.5 9.6 205/75 15 = 27.1 8.1 215/75 15 = 27.7 8.5 225/75 15 = 28.3 8.9 235/75 15 = 28.9 9.3 245/75 15 = 29.5 9.6 265/75 15 = 30.6 10.4 215/85 15 = 29.4 8.5 245/85 15 = 31.4 9.6 275/85 15 = 33.4 10.8 315/85 15 = 36.1 12.4 325/60 15 = 30.4 12.8 16 inch tires sizes Width Aspect Wheel Diameter Section Width 305/65 16 = 31.6 12.0 345/65 16 = 33.7 13.6 245/70 16 = 29.5 9.6 305/70 16 = 32.8 12.0 225/75 16 = 29.3 8.9 245/75 16 = 30.5 9.6 265/75 16 = 31.6 10.4 285/75 16 = 32.8 11.2 295/75 16 = 33.3 11.6 215/85 16 = 30.4 8.5 235/85 16 = 31.7 9.3 255/85 16 = 33.1 10.0 265/85 16 = 33.7 10.4 305/85 16 = 36.4 12.0 255/70 16 = 30.1 10.0 The above numbers are computed values and some rounding has been done on the computed values. The actual tire sizes can and will vary depending on the tire manufacturer. To compute the values in the table above, use the formula of: HEIGHT = ((width * aspect-ratio * 2) / 2550) + rim size WIDTH = (width / 25.50 ) For example, a 235/75R15 tire is ((235*75*2)/2550)+15) = 28.8 inches of tire height. The tire width is figured by 235/25.5 = 9.21 Metric tire sizes are stated as three numbers. The way it reads is: width / aspect ratio R tire rim size 235 / 75 R 15 Tire Size Calculator P-Metric Size Actual Tire Width Actual Tire Height 15-inch rims 205/70R15 8.7 inches 26.2 inches 215/75R15 8.46 inches 27.6 inches 235/75R15 9.25 inches 28.8 inches 265/70R15 10.4 inches 29.6 inches 16-inch rims 245/75R16 9.64 inches 30.4 inches 285/75R16 11.2 inches 32.8 inches 315/75R16 12.4 inches 34.6 inches 395/70R16 15.5 inches 37.7 inches 17-inch rims 235/65R17 9.25 inches 29.5 inches 265/70R17 10.4 inches 31.6 inches 255/75R17 10.4 inches 32.0 inches 285/70R17 11.2 inches 32.7 inches 315/70R17 12.4 inches 34.3 inches -
31"s fit under no lift with no rub?
case5412 replied to case5412's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, I just got some 3.55 gears and already had them installed. Still how big inches wise are the 235/75/15. I saw firestone only had 30" destination MTs. -
92 MJ, 13 months to make magic
case5412 replied to case5412's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Well, today wasn't fun. After searching a few junk yards, nearly 30 XJs and 1 MJ I found none had the AX15 transmission with the small little 4WD bracket I need. :( I also ran into a problem with the rear axle. The year of the axle is 89, and my MJ is a 92, for some reason when you put the 3.55 gears into my MJ 3.07 rear end it doesn't seem to be a perfect match. They seem to be the same exact differential, but it makes a knocking sound now, like it's loose. (I'll post this on MJ Tech if my problem isn't solved soon) I plan on getting some 3.55 gears from a 91 and up, if anyone knows a good dealer please let me know, cause I don't want to embark on another long search right now. I could put the XJ axle I got on the rear but all the break lines and brackets are in the wrong place, so it seems less labor intensive to find some 3.55 gears for my current MJ axle. I'll get some pictures up on how my MJ looks soon. (if I would've found the "this thread is useless without pics" smiley, I would post it now) -
92 MJ, 13 months to make magic

I may sound a little big headed by saying this but if you click on my profile and you notice my "occupation" you would then realize that my work practices are safe. Sorry to worry you all with the scary pictures. :smart: Sorry I didn't have new pictures posted the other night, I forgot my camera and I'll get some on here Saturday when I go to the junk yard, again. I'm making the trip for the bracket that hooks to the transmission that has the 4WD lever on it. -
Is there no aftermarket support?
case5412 replied to SW86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sorry no help here. But I will be checking in on this thread later to see if this bumper worked for you. -
You would not bore me with all the details. Heck reading these forms beats watching boring ole TV. Oh and the long beds are awesome, nothing like being longer than the compition, plus you can haul a bunch more crap. I wish my short bed was a long bed. :chillin: Nice work by the way; keep the progress rolling.

31"s fit under no lift with no rub?
case5412 replied to case5412's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thats correct and the JK wheels are 16" I have a set if anyone needs them I'll start the bidding at $700.00 ;) My wheels are 15" -
Let me know if I am comprehending this correctly. I read the thread supplied by your link over a few times, I noticed that there's "two" places to engage 4WD, the t-case and the CAD. My MJ does not have a CAD engaging switch only a t-case gear (correct?) and I am thinking if I lock the CAD over on my donor axle then I should be fine to engage the t-case 4WD with the gear lever, therefore my truck will be in 4WD by using the t-case lever only. Essentially; lock the CAD in place using the instructions, then use the lever in my truck to engage 4WD? :wavey:

The high pinion D30 I matched in my MJ has a vacuum 4x4 thing. Is there a way to remove it or must I find a different matching axle.

92 MJ, 13 months to make magic
case5412 replied to case5412's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
It's been 4 months since my last post; I'm sorry for not being a freaquent poster but life can get busy from time to time. I've also noticed how much of a mess my thread is, sorry bought that also but I am a newbie to forums. :waving: My truck has been coming along slowly but surely. My plan has changed, due to budget concerns, but I am still building and restoring my MJ nicely. My goal is still the same “to complete a nice daily driver before my Wife returns”. She should be returning some time middle November. Current MJ location: A shop with no drive shafts sitting there ready for some major swaps. (not in my house any longer) :huh???: Old plans and new plans: OLD: My old plan was to get a D44 front axle and a rear to match, convert it to 4WD, restore the old broken pieces and lift it 4.5 inches with a SUA. Let’s not forget 35” tires and various off road upgrades. NEW: Due to finance and time issues I’ve had to remove most of my “off road” goals and put my energy towards basic repairs and restoration. I had to have someone rebuild the transmission, so I got a new one out of an older MJ 4WD. My current goal is to make the truck drivable and reliable so I’ll have a daily driver by mid November. Recent progress: I got the truck to the shop about 2 weeks ago and I began with the axle hunt. I found a Wagoner with D44 front, it was nice and I found a rear D44 out of an Isuzu, it was also nice. But after realizing how long the truss (for the waggy front end) would take to order and how long it would take to order my lift and the money I would have to put into it just for the uniqueness. Don't get me wrong I do love uniqueness but I'm hardly ever practical and I need to be now. So I scratched the lift and axles and took them back, no problem only a couple hours of work wasted. I then started for the repair search. Needed a new transmission and stock axles off a donor, basically a few stock donor parts, and I needed new wheels because I used my Comanche wheels on my Compass. As of now I have two donor axles out of a 89 Cherokee, got them from a junk yard for about 200.00$, they are D30s with a 3.55 gear ratio, high pinion front. I plan on keeping the 3.55 ratio because it'll do for the goals I've set. I also bought some Wrangler 2006 stock steel wheels from an army recruiter for 60.00$, probably the best money I've spent since I started this project. I'll post the wheels picture below. I'll get current pictures of my truck by tomorrow night, and of the new axles and transmission. I got an AX15, not sure if it's a good transmission but it was laying around in someones back yard so I had it rebuilt and it's in my truck now. Will update more tomorrow. Thanks for reading my short story, lol. My cat seems to always jump in the pics. He will be my riding partner. Those boxes I assume are from the new wheels the guy I got the steel wheels from came in; his left over boxes. I tried to get good picture quality in my new pics; from now on I'll try to make my thread at least semi entertaining for you all. :hijack: Thanks for reading, Casey  -
You can easily gain the stock specifications of your truck by emailing Chrysler the last 8 numbers of your VIN and asking for a "spec sheet". If that helps at all. ;)

DJHS Dana M30/181MM Front Axle DMDS 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio DRJS 175MM Rear Axle here's what Chrysler said. I'm not sure what it all means, maybe yall can explain.
-
why would I drain the oil out? Here's the axle. It looked like high pinion on the truck but now it looks like low pinion. Can yall tell?
-
I attempted to pull the cover at the JY but I didn't have a wide enough flat head to pry the cover off without harming the seal. Plus it has a ton of clue sealant on it and I don't want to have to reseal it right now. I got the VIN I'm going to email Chrysler right now and see what they say. I'm getting the rear tomorrow morning to match, unless somehow this axle is 3.07 ratio, then no use in getting the rear.
-
I'm pulling a high pinion D30 off a Cherokee right now. But idk how to check for gear ratio, I don't see a tag. I could use VIN for stock specs IJ4FJ38L6KL438279

thank you, I've printed out everyones advice and I'm bringing it with me to the JY now. I'll post later.

For a truly bolt-in rear axle, it has to come from an MJ (Comanche). The spring perches will be located on the underside of the axle tubes. XJ (Cherokee) axles are the exact same axles as MJ axles, bbut the spring perches are located on the top of the axle tubes. All that's necessary to put an XJ axle into an MJ is to grind the welds holding the perches to the tubes, relocate the perches to the correct location AND ANGLE as an MJ axles, and reweld. There are four possible axles you might find under an XJ: In early ones, you will usually find a dana 35 but you might find a Dana 44. In XJs 1991 through 1996, you may find a Dana 35 or maybe a Chrysler 8-1/4" with 27-spline (small) axle shafts. From 1997 through 2001 you might find a Dana 35 or a Chrysler 8-1/4" with 29-spline (larger/better) axle shafts. Thanks for explaining what is under an XJ. Which one would be the best option and I'll look for that. Any drive sfaht complications that I might run into? Or other rear end options that may exist at the JY to try and match my gear ratio. Thanks again,
-
It seems you are confused and I'd blame me. They said the low pinion D44 isn't worth the trouble, so go with a high pinion D30, which is what I'll look for tomorrow. I see in your picture that the high pinion has a different shape pumpkin, maybe that's all I see, but I should be able to tell them apart from that picture. Thank you. Can someone post a picture of the bolt in axle I'm looking for? So I can compare it to the one at the JY, or, post the XJ years that had the easy swaping axles, would be very helpful and ensure that I don't waste my time pulling off the wrong axles again.

The Isuzu also has 6 lugs. I'm just sleepy, been up too long, haha, what was I thinking. How can you tell high pinion and low pinion apart? I also do not know what "5 on 5" centers" means, so the answer to your question is: No, I am no aware of this

I've settled on what I want and hopefully yall can educate me on what to get. I need a few things at the junk yard but I'm not sure exactly. This jy has nearly 20 XJs and about 1 MJ. 1. My rear axle is at 3.07 gear ratio and I need a matching front strait axle. OR I can grab the D44 rear from the Isuzu Rodeo and grab a matching gear ratio front from the XJs or MJ (hopefully a little better than sluggish 3.07); I would only do this if the Isuzu was an easy swap, because I want easy and I want a daily driver by next Friday. My drive shaft doesn't fit right now anyway because the truck was 2WD. 2. I'm also grabbing the gear nob and the hook ups down to the transfer case for the 4WD shifter nob. I currently don't have one. So that's 3 things I want. Hopefully matching XJ/MJ axles for an easy swap or XJ front and the Isuzu rear, which I hope is also an easy swap. I also have another question. I keep getting lectured on getting a high pinion D30 and forgetting my low pinion D44. I don't actually understand the term completely. But I can look that up, please answer the questions that are impossible to look up. Thanks in advance for the info... Casey
