TJ yoke not YJ... they are both 23 spline
-
What's the difference between a YJ 231 front output yoke and an xj yoke? Besides 30$ difference ?
-
It is an early 90s, so it has the standard u-joint yoke not the DC joint.

OK guys so I'm wrapping up my 4x4 swap Just in time for snow... I've encountered an issue. The AX15 and 231 Tcase is out of a YJ that is in my MJ. Number one the front output is different, and number two the front driveshaft I have is the wrong length. (It's from an auto xj) by swapping the output flange will I be OK with the auto driveshaft or will I need another?

So I'm starting a new project, building a buggy for my son. It's not going to be a fancy one with Sami axles and a transaxle.. it's going to be a lawn mower frame, hydrostatic rear end mounted in the center of the frame with sprockets running a chain drive to a front and rear axle. The front axle I'm using Dana 30 short shafts, knuckles and unit bearings. The body I'm going to water jet willys MB body panels. Here is where you chime in with your info, I've searched for leaf springs from a utility trailer.. lowest rating I've found is 300# ... any suggestions?

2wd xj driveshafts lengths
egghead replied to 88whitemanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Go under the DIY section.. I believe there is a list of driveshaft lengths. Not guaranteeing any 2wd XJ info? -
I'm currently running the 2nd AX15, I know I have gone and asked this question before.. I just was reading a post and the guy stated that he had clearance issues with his drive shaft. I wanted to ask the manche gurus first. Haha. I don't have a pic because I do all my surfing from a phone and the only place I have pics that are uploaded are on facebook. Is it really all that necessary to swap out to an external slave? I was givin' a brand new slave and clutch with the transmission.
-
Anyone know much about ax15s? I picked up one from a wrangler with the number 52108050 which came up as a 94 up. The thing that stumps me is that it is an internal slave. (Did someone swap bellhousings?) Also.... will I need to clock the transfer Case up during my install? Will it cause problems for the driveline? Thanks Egghead

Right on! New nut or old nut, Eagle? -
8.25 pinion seal (not in the jeep)
egghead replied to egghead's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Eagle, thanks for the reply. I was unaware of using a new nut everytime. I was not planning on getting a new crush sleeve. Is this going to be a problem? -

Looks like a blast! Nice looking MJ! -
So I'm in process of swapping out my dana 35 for an 8.25 with 4.10s. The PO took the pinion flange off for another one of his jeeps. He ended up getting me another, now I'm pondering on replacing the seal only problem I'm running into is the crush sleeve design.. since he took the old one off and didn't mark location of the nut to return it to the proper position. Is there a way to do this by an estimate torque spec?

ax15 from 92 YJ for my 4x4 swap
egghead replied to egghead's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok so I picked the ax15 up today, the number is 52108050. Comes up being a 94-96 ax15. The guy gave me a brand new clutch with it, but autozone part numbers are saying it does not match to my 90. What changed that I should be aware about? I have a 92 HO 4.0 that has a brand new clutch sitting in my garage, I was planning on using that clutch with my renix, unless it won't work either? -
ax15 from 92 YJ for my 4x4 swap
egghead replied to egghead's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My 90' currently has the 2wd AX15, I should be able to use this crossmember correct? I've heard different tales of the clocking of the yj 231. Some people say you have to beat with a BFH, others not. I guess I'll just have to see for myself! Egg -
I understand there are some differences such as the clock of the tcase/ shifter linkage/ front yoke of the tcase.. is there anything else I need to know? I've got a guy who will sell me the transmission and tcase for 250$ if I help pull it. (Currently my truck is 2wd) Thanks Egg

It's heavy in areas, I used gas on most of it. He used some cheap primer and some John Wayne primer. You can guess which one is tougher. Hah, I'm going to get some laquour thinner and try it. Thanks for the imput!
-
Haha I knew that's the answer I was going to get, I just didn't know if anyone had any other ideas.
-
I have a PO who decided to primer areas on the MJ that are not needed. I'm wanting to try and remove it. Gas, laquour thinner, paint thinner? Power washer? What are your tricks to removing primer without harming the paint?
-
Where's it at now KC
-
Thanks for the posts! Looks like I've got a few ideas now.
-
You are talking SUA correct? What are "GS" springs?
-
Just exploring my options, I figured I'm going to be cutting off perches of the 8.25 already anyway. I do have access to a set of XJ packs to build a "Bastard pack" and have a set of chevy drop shackles. I'm unclear on where to pick up a set of metric ton packs?

Hey guys so I picked up a 90' MJ the other day. It's currently 2wd with a 3" lift up front and 0 lift in the rear. I'm looking to get ideas on a SOA rear without netting 5" I'm swapping out the 35 rear for an 8.25 with 4.10s. (Yes I'm converting to 4wd as well) picked up an AX15, 231 and a set of 4.10 axles for 350$ If I make spring perches as low as possible, (machinist by trade) use XJ shackles and possibly take out a spring.. I'm thinking I may be close to where I want to be. Am I crazy? What am I missing? I'll throw another curve ball and note I'm looking to gain load capacity too.. hmm Egg -I think I'm thinking too much- head

Hey guys it's been a while since I last posted.. maybe 7 or 8 years. HAH!! I had an 87' MJ when I was 18 or 19 and I loved it! I decided it's time to get another. I'm picking up a 90' short bed Pioneer 2wd. It already has a 3" lift up front and 32x11.5 wildcountries. It's the Renix (obviously) 4.0 5 speed. Has 3.07 gears and comes with a high pinion 30 (3.07) and a 92' 4 litre with 140,000 miles on it. I know of two cherokees I can get ahold of that are 4x4. The first one is a 97' with a good drive train, it has been wrecked so it is lacking the front clip. 400$ The next is an 01' with a blown engine but good body, Trans axles and tcase. Wheels tires and lift. 500$ My goal is to put the 97+ front clip and doors on and swap to four wheel drive. I have a buddy who wants the 4.0 and wants to swap a HP dana 30 and an 8.25 27 spline both with 4.10s for it. I'm really wanting to go 8.8 though. Which cherokee should I drag home for parts and would you swap a 4 litre with 140,000 miles for the axles? Egghead
