Guys - after considering Fernando's advice and unplugging each of my injectors one at a time - all of which made an impact on idle etc - i unplugged my new CPS, and of course the engine died immediately - upon replugging the CPS back in and starting the thing it ran smoothly and didn't miss a beat (was running like $#!& before unplugging the thing) - any thought upon possible bad (new) CPS or wires going to it?? any way to determine what the culprit may be, wiring or CPS? thx! Mike

hey gang - so this is a continuation of an older thread but decided to start afresh. Anyway 87 4.0 2WD - rebuild motor with about 12k on it. After i had changed the injectors and all new plug wires/plugs (all old ones looked fine - no fouling etc)/shocks she started running rough - felt like it was missing on 1 cylinder and sputtered a bit when gas applied. I changed out all the battery cables and cleaned all the ground connections and replaced all my vacuum lines - thought i had it licked, started up and ran sweet, drove it around the block a few time - yup nice!! Well next day took truck to the gym and ran a few errands, when i jumped in it to go home problem resurfaces - crap - rough running, poor acceletration, rough idle. must be the CPS, so get one from rock auto - their most $ one as i don't want to go cheap. put it in (easy to do!), truck fires up - runs sweet - yeah fixed it nice!! Ok run to the Bev mo to get some IPA's to celebrate - runs sweet, great - until i come out of the place and start her up to drive home. CRAP, running rough again, same symptoms as before. Stopped at some little auto repair place blocks from my house on way home - pissed a bit at it- guy looks at it for a few hrs and says yup - its running rough on a cylinder but he's pretty much useless (wants to do a compression check (the problem is intermittent i tell him, and plugs looked fine ) mentions the water pumps is making a noise and tha catalyic converter probabaly isn't the best, but like i said those aren't causing my problems, he agrees and doesn't charge me but makes me realize this is going to have to be a home remedy as shop will be useless with my old truck). The one thing I have noticed that makes me think something strange is up is it never goes from running well to running like crap while driving it - only after shutting it off and then restarting after a bit to head else where (small sample size though). Also a question - could one of the injectors be bad - i've only had them in for a few weeks? any other suggestions? love my truck but loving it a bit less with the problem, which i suspect is a small deal but is driving me crazy thanks as always! Mike

Rough idle/stumping with gas and poor acceleration

Cruiser 54 and Eagle The truck is back and running beautifully - don't know if it was the vacuum lines or replacing all the battery cables/ground/block wiring but she runs most excellent - thank you both as i was starting to sweat it out - even ordered an replacement CPS which will go into the part for later box!! thanks! i looked and looked just recently, but no new mats are/were available that don't need to be cut

thx Cruiser - did just that, just waiting for some shiney new eyehole electrical connectors things as didn't want to use the crappy ones from autoparts store -
Rough idle/stumping with gas and poor acceleration

it probably did at some point in the past, now there is just a mess on the end and my torx sockets won't fit, thus the reason for sourcing a new one and necessitating sniping the ring ends off the wires and redoing it thx! -

Yup the stud was in there very tight, but the nut won't come off rather the whole stud wants to unwind so of course it will break the wires on it - anyone know the actual part number of the stud so i can order a new one, then i can cut the wires and put new ends on them and apply a new stud etc etc thx! mike Sure could be. But with a loose dipstick grounding stud, all bets are off until that's addressed. The Renix era XJs and MJs were built with an under-engineered grounding system for the engine/transmission electronics. One problem in particular involves the multiple ground connection at the engine dipstick tube stud. A poor ground here can cause a multitude of driveabililty issues, wasted time, failed emission tests, and wasted money replacing components unnecessarily. The components grounding at the dipstick tube stud are: Distributor Sync Sensor, TCU main ground, TCU “Shift Point Logic”, Ignition control Module, Injectors, ECU main ground which other engine sensors ground through, Oxygen sensor, Knock Sensor, Cruise Control, and Transmission Sync signal. All extremely important stuff. -
Hey gang So i think i have learned to leave well enough alone - to date i had replaced my fuel injectors and all new plus/caps/dist etc etc and the truck (87 2wd) was running well - idle wasn't the greatest, but since i hadn't owned the thing long maybe that the way it just was suppose to be. Well disaster has struck (well not that much disaster). i decided to replace all the shocks and for the driver side i took out the airbox etc etc to get to the shock nut. When i got the thing back together i took it for a quick drive and was thinking man these bilensteins sure changed the ride to sweetness, but did notice a tiny bit of hesitation when accelerating from a stop for just the mili-second when i first hit the pedal, but it ran smoothly afterwards and if i just hit the pedal a bit more aggressive it powered though it. Today when i was going out i noticed the stumble again (starts just fine), and it ran much worse (noticeable missing/roughness in running) and really won't go past 65 on the freeway - $#!&. Ok, so i replaced all the plugs (i had the champion iridium in) with champion coppers - no change. i cleaned the battery terminals and the braided cable contact points - i wanted to check the block ground by the dip stick, but the stud is unwinding rather than the nut so i have to come up with plan b for that (snip wires and reconnect w/ new hardware to try and figure what kind of POS end is on that stud to try and hold it while losing the nut, regardless i sprayed penetrating oil on it for another day). I also looked at all the vacuum hoses and can see no obvious ones off or cracked, but just to be careful i ordered a new set from Napa. I also cleaned the junction box thing that was full of the black tar crap - all this stuff and still the same piss poor running afterwards. Anyways i ordered the upgraded wiring for ground etc from Jon Kelley, and while waiting for them and the vacuum harness ( 3-4 days i'm guessing - which means next weekend) wanted to get a few opinions of problems/fixes i may want to consider - any and all input appreciated of course! thanks mike

Hey Gang Ok, so new injectors in, new shocks & steering damper in - running sweet! time to address the fog lights, which i assume were orginally setup to go on with the head lights as i can't find any switch for them (87 2 wd) - on peeking at the lights them self it looks like some sort of PO monkeyness so thinking i'll rewire them w/ a switch set up on the dash. Any suggestions for good point to run a hot wire off from - some where off the fuse box or other suggestions ? thx as always really loving these trucks! mike

thx gang - like rustyb said i just baough some vacuum line and spliced it in - runs great thx on engine bay - but i can't take the credit - guy i bought it from was anal rentative about it (even more than me)
-
awesome thx - i take it is is no longer available?!?
-
first question for me!! hey all - while putting in new injectors i snapped this line and need to replace it (i presssed the broken part out of the rubber block and inserted the broken end kinda into it) - also i noticed there is a hole in the rubber block above this line - does something go there? thanks! mike

1/4" thick piece of diamond plate, on the front too - like i mentioned i plan on hauling bikes so a bit of extra protection for stuff banging into the bed front/back

thx All - its a crappy ACC repo carpet - its loose on the tranny hump and the rear section is pure crap fittin wise - didn't fold over the frame like the orginal runner mat did - i scoured around for someone else who makes one but had no luck and in the end i was just like F'it - but having said that if i get a hair up my @$$ i may redo it but thought it looks good for now yeah the seat came out sweet - i had an unphosletry guy do it here in Orange County in color i liked from a pattern i saw in some rod magazine - he said he like it so much too that he wanted to put it on his little web site, apparently a customer with a porsche saw it he wanted his seat done the same - i never new porsche's had bench seats but there ya go!

Hello all i have been lurking for a month or so until i had my MJ all together before posting it etc etc. i picked it up my 87 from the second owner, who bought it off a preacher who lived in central calif. It has a new engine (10K on it now) as apparently the second owner wanted to run mobil 1 which promptly loosed up all the old sludge and blew motor/head right apart. I was told that the cream top was stock from the dealer as it was sold in an agriculture area of calif and the color was hoped to keep the occupant from cooking his brains out in the calif summer. I replaced the carpets (which don't fix quite right as documented), the head liner, and had the seat reupholstered (i like bench seats!). i bought the thing really to haul old motorcycles (and probably paid way to much!), but it seems like everything i own i always want to fix it up etc - i really love the thing now. I imagine i'll have questions as i start to delve a bit deeper into it, as i want to replace the injectors and shocks first and will no doubt encounter additional problems as the develop so i look forward to hearing from those in the know on the forum. here's a few pics - hope you enjoy mike old bikes
